Remix: The 12-hour iOS development challenge happening at Mind Camp 7!

Mind Camp 7 iOS coding competition

UPDATE: If you're an iOS developer, artist, designer, or engineer, and want to take part in REMIX, Monster Costume is offering you free access to the entire Mind Camp 7 event! Drop an email to andru AT gearlve.com to get your free ticket.

If you're an iOS developer, designer, artist or the like, you'll wanna pay attention to yet another reason why Seattle Mind Camp 7 is where you'll wanna be on August 20! Monster Costumer, the sponsor of Mind Camp 7, will be hosting REMIX - an overnight 12-hour iOS game development challenge. Teams of three will take the existing source code of a never-before-published, bare bones, functional iOS game. It is then your task to take that code, and mash on it until it's a game of unsurpassed brilliance (or, you know, until 12 hours is up.) At the end of the challenge, the team with the most outstanding finished product, as determined by our judges and Mind Camp attendees, will be named the winner - and all three team members will each receive an Apple iPad 2!

The competition will begin at 9:00pm, so you'll be able to enjoy all the other sessions and festivities during Mind Camp - but overnight you'll be battling to walk away with a trio of iPads, and to show off your stuff. Monster Costume will even partner with your team to publish the game to the App Store.

So, what is the game to be remixed? We figured you'd ask, but unfortunately that's being kept secret until 9:01pm on August 20!

Be sure to get registered for Seattle Mind Camp 7 so you can take part in the competition - and then head on over to the REMIX registration page. There's no extra fee to participate in the REMIX challenge, but this helps us plan for how many people want to take part, who's teaming up with who, who needs a teammate, etc.

Verizon 4G LTE is ridiculously fast in Seattle

4G LTE Speed Test HTC Thunderbolt

The image above is the result of a speed test using the HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon's 4G LTE network in Seattle. Techinically, Gear Live HQ is about a 20 minute drive north of Seattle, so even well outside the border of the metropolitan area, you still see speeds like this. Now, obviously Verizon isn't able to deliver this kind of speed everywhere that LTE is deployed, and as more devices are sold and the network gets more saturated, things will even out...but it shows the obvious potential that LTE has over other 4G technologies like WiMax. Now you can see why AT&T made the decision to buy T-Mobile. They have no way of competing with what Verizon is rolling out currently.

What are you missing if you don’t have a ticket to Conan O’Brien’s road tour? Well, in addition to appearances from Andy Richter, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and Coco himself, possibly some great musical numbers.

On Sunday (Conan O’Brien’s birthday), surprise guest Dave Matthews - with help from some audience members in Seattle - sang “Happy Birthday” to the late-night host before leading into a performance of “Bartender.”

The next day, and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam both visited the show and rocked the house with a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” (You can see that performance after the jump.)

Jason Bay’s future is in his hands

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,

Jason BayIs Jason Bay selling out? This is always a tough question to ask, and fans are often polarized by such a question. By not agreeing to any of the offers given to him by the Red Sox, he is testing the patience of the Boston fan base. Some would say that Bay is fully entitled to test the free agent market. He has earned the right to play where he wants and for as much money as he can get. Others would say that Bay has a good thing going in Boston. The fans love him, the team loves him, and he’s just plain good. Both arguments are correct. It just comes down to what Bay wants to do.

AT&T boosts Seattle-area 3G coverage with 850 MHz spectrum

This morning announced that they’ve done a “substantial upgrade” of its 3G coverage in the Seattle area, having deployed additional wireless spectrum using the 850 MHz band. According to AT&T, the upgrade should mean that customers in Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Renton, Auburn, and King County should all have better 3G connectivity, performance, and the signal should be much stronger when indoors as well. The move should also increase overall network capacity, which AT&T is hoping will support subscriber growth.

Since Gear Live HQ is located smack-dab in the middle of the enhanced coverage area, we’ll be giving things a try, and we will let you know if the use of 850 MHz spectrum truly helps the dire situation that is AT&T coverage. Seattle and 3G users, give it your best!

VIDEO: Pink Talks About Demanding Funhouse Tour

‘s “most physically and vocally demanding” show of her life kicked off in the United States this week in dramatic fashion.

Although the crowd in Seattle gave her a warm reception, there was one element missing from the singer’s Funhouse tour: her “Sober” trapeze act. (A stand-in took over the high-flying duties during that segment.)

Pink revealed early in the program that she had somehow separated her shoulder. (She also said that her purse and phone were recently stolen.) Despite the pain, the 30-year-old refused to cancel the concert and carried on like a professional.

Puerto Rican Cuisine Done Right: La Isla Restaurant Review

La IslaOver the years, my husband and I have eaten at a lot of restaurants, I hesitate to say hundreds because it makes it sound like I never cook at home, but I would not be surprised if it were true. We love food. From shopping for quality ingredients, to preparation, and execution of a great dish. It is all so fascinating, not to mention delicious if said recipe turns out as it was intended. So in order to share my love or hate for a particular restaurant, I will be reviewing these establishments now and then so that the everyday person can go in knowing what to expect and what to order and what not to order should you walk away in disgust.

Today, I will be writing about one of my favorite restaurants in the Seattle area, La Isla, located in Ballard. It is not the easiest place to get to as far as easy freeway access, but so worth the drive. I love Puerto Rican food, as my husband does, and we don’t have any other restaurants in this area, for that matter anywhere in this region that we have heard of that offers the dishes that one must have to call themselves an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant. Why is that I wonder? I hope many more will open in this area following in the footsteps of La Isla, but they will have big shoes to fill.
