NASA Launches Moon Probes

Atlas Liftoff

Although a space shuttle mission was canceled because of a hydrogen gas leak, NASA successfully launched its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter on an Atlas V rocket along with a Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite yesterday. Sent off at 5:32 p.m. ET, the LRO, scheduled to reach its destination June 23, has a mission is to look for potential landing sites for astronauts while the LCROSS will be looking for evidence of water on the moon’s poles.

The mid-priced 5.8-inch AVIC-X710BT goes for $1,000.00 while the AVIC-X910BT comes at a cost of $1,200.00. Both have RCA outputs and built-in Bluetooth. The top of the line AVIC-Z110BT $1,800.00 unit has all the features that the other three have, gives map and route info simultaneously with voice control, plus HD and satellite radio capability, and a 7-inch motorized LCD screen.

Harris Poll Finds DTV Transition Mostly Positive Experience

It didn’t take long for Harris to take a poll to find out how many TV watchers will opt for free OTA today. Fifty five percent said they are likely to switch to antennas and drop their cable or satellite subscriptions, while those under 24 seem the most positive about the switch. Sixty nine percent found that the transition will be “good,” and the company’s Jay Adrick feels that “consumers are embracing the change.” We are not sure we agree with the survey completely as most viewers we know wouldn’t dream of giving up their gazillion+ channels.

Satellite Crash Causes Space Trash

Space TrashAfter last week’s collision of two satellites in space, experts estimate tens of thousands of pieces of space junk that they will now have to monitor. They already track over 17,000 pieces larger than 2 to 4 inches in diameter. The incident occurred between a U.S. Iridium commercial satellite and a derelict Russian military one about 500 miles above the planet. The FAA has received reports of falling debris over Texas, which could be related to the crash but was not confirmed. Either way, it may be 10,000 years before the floating stuff, seen in this artist’s rendering, will not be a threat to other satellites.

Google Earth Beta 5.0 Features Underwater, Outer Space

Google EarthGoogle has added 3D renderings of the ocean floor in its latest update since 4.3. Google Earth 5.0 is still free to download. Track gray whales, explore shipwrecks and see what the water looked like up to 50 years ago. Also in the new Google Earth are maps and satellite images of Mars, including probe landing spots, and you can save your toured places to share with other GE users.

Gov. Paterson Proposes iPod Tax

iTunes logoNew York’s Governor David Paterson is trying to come up with creative ways to pad the state’s $15.4 billion deficit. One of these is an “iPod tax” that would charge for downloaded music and other “digitally delivered entertainment services.” In addition, cable and satellite TV services, movie tickets, taxis, soda, beer, wine, cigars and massages will also be taxed. The proposal must still get legislative approval and we expect that if it passes, there may be an influx of New Yorkers flooding to places like New Jersey to get their tunes.
