The Surrogates & Alan Moore: On Sale Now!

surrogates
It costs a bunch of money to make a movie and nearly as much to actually go see one in the theaters. Top Shelf has hit a fall jackpot with their comic book The Surrogates, written by Robert Venditti and drawn by Brett Weldele. It’s debuting as a movie on September 25th, directed by Jonathan Mostow, written by John Brancato and Michael Ferris and starring Bruce Willis and Rosamund Pike.

To celebrate the movie’s release (check out the trailer after the jump!), Top Shelf is debuting The Surrogates comics at iTunes, so you can read the original graphic novel on your iPod Touch or iPhone. You can get the first two issues for 99¢ and the remaining three issues for 99¢ each. If that seems like too big a risk for you, then you can just download the entire first issue—that’s The Surrogates #1—for free from the iTunes App Store. Got it?

Between now and September 25th, Top Shelf will be taking advantage of the slow fall comic book season and offering up a whopper of a sale to celebrate: lots of great graphic novels and comic booky stuff for $3 a pop and reduced prices for their prime Alan Moore books like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Lost Girls, and From Hell. Also, Halloween is coming up, and what better gift than a copy of Johnny Boo by James Kochalka?

It’s a great time to be alive.

Manolo Blahnik Gets Sick Over Sex and the City

Manolo Blahnik at the Sex and the City premiereShoe designer Manolo Blahnik is in a love-hate relationship with Sex and the City.

“If people talk to me about Sex and the City, I get sick…It’s sweet but it becomes too much and I don’t feel comfortable. I have never wanted to be a celebrity designer.”

Although he gripes about the show that made his name synonymous with expensive, fashionable, well-made shoes, the British designer admits that it does help keep the line in business.

“Well, we had a very good year last year, thanks to those stupid satin shoes [worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in the movie]. That shoe saved our company.”

Talk about being grateful.

Daisy Lowe for Swarovski

Daisy Lowe to unveil Swarovski collectionNow that fashion designers are on television, it’s no surprise that models like Daisy Lowe are branching out, creating a jewelery range with Swarovski.

The British model has teamed by with the luxury crystal company for a capsule line which will be available from January.

She told W: “It’s four pieces—a necklace, bracelet, ring and set of earrings. They’re kind of magical in a dark, romantic way. I’ve incorporated black and white, star and moon crystals, and multiple strands of chains. I wanted it to be about the earth, moon, and planetary movements, all that kind of weird stuff.”

The 20-year-old star, who has modeled for Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and , also refused to rule out creating a clothing collection, but admitted she has no immediate plans to do so: “I’m so in love with fashion and playing with clothes, so I would never say no to designing fashion.”

Daisy isn’t the only model to show an interest in creating accessories—last month, Amber Le Bon revealed she was considering going to university to study jewelery making. She said, “You have to take every opportunity you can. I have loads of designs on paper and there is a really good jewelery course at London’s Central Saint Martins. A friend of mine has just graduated from there, so I may look into that.”

Katie Holmes Bumps Victoria Beckham Out of Maxfield

Holmes will replace Beckham in MaxfieldFor some bizarre reason, Katie Holmes‘s fashion range is set to replace Victoria Beckham’s at a US store.

It has been claimed Los Angeles boutique Maxfield will sell Katie’s new collection Holmes and Yang, after dropping her close friend’s denim line dVb by Victoria Beckham.

A source told the New York Post, “Maxfield no longer carries dVb. It is because of poor sales.”

However, Beckham’s representative insists the exclusive boutique hasn’t stocked Victoria’s denim collection for some time: “Maxfield has not carried any dVb product for the past three seasons.” Maxfield’s representative wouldn’t say when the store dropped the fashion line.

This isn’t the first shop to stop stocking Victoria’s designs.

Naomi Campbell’s Recession Warning

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories:

Naomi Campbell on one of the Vogue Italia Black Issue covers believes that the recession has stopped black models from getting work. The outspoken supermodel claims advertising executives are shying away from using ethnic minority models in their campaigns because they “don’t dare” risk losing sales.

She told Britain’s Sunday Telegraph, “This year, we have gone back all the way that we had advanced. I don’t see any black woman, or of any other race, in big advertising campaigns.”

Last summer, the 39-year-old beauty appeared in Vogue Italia’s Black Issue, in celebration of black women. Although she was initially positive about the shoot, Naomi is now concerned the ongoing global financial crisis has undone the impact it had.

“That made some noise but, unfortunately, we are the same as before. People, in the panic of recession, don’t dare to put a girl of color in their campaign, full stop,” Campbell said of the issue.

Fashion designer Bruce Oldfield has echoed Naomi’s comments: “It’s absolutely true that black models will not be as popular for advertising companies and magazine covers as white girls.”

Quote of the Day: Ashley Olsen on What Her Customers Don’t Know

Olsen twins at their New York factory

“The customer who buys the clothes almost never knows [Mary-Kate and I are] involved.”

- Ashley Olsen on The Row customers (right, because those who can afford to buy $3,000 t-shirts are completely out of touch with fashion industry knowledge).
