Research camp to introduce subtle changes in NHL

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL,

Brendan ShanahanThe National Hockey League has been trying out some possible rule changes this week. Dubbed the 2010 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp, general managers across the league have helped shape the tests to evaluate the effectiveness of various aspects of NHL hockey. The NHL has acknowledged that players are faster, stronger and more skilled than ever before, so they want to see if any subtle improvements could be made to the game while still maintaining its integrity and not confusing fans.

Interleague play on its growing edge

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: MLB,

Roy HalladayInterleague play wraps up this week, and if nothing else, it certainly seems like things have become a little stale. Overall, the American League has dominated their older brothers since 2004, and that hasn’t changed this season. With the novelty of the in-season, cross-league games worn off, it seems that every year more people are starting to question the necessity of Interleague play going forward. MLB is aware that there are those with their problems, but it does not look like things will improve soon.

NHL hopes to punish for headshots before the playoffs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Front Office, NHL,

Colin CampbellThe NHL has announced that they want to implement their head-shots rule as soon as possible. There’s just some of the usual red tape to be taken care of first. Two years ago, the league adopted the affectionately-named “Sean Avery” rule the day after Avery was seen blatantly obstructing Devils goalie Martin Brodeur without any other concern for on-ice action. However, the league called it an “interpretation” of an existing rule. That in itself is the NHL’s biggest problem. Many rules are open to interpretation.

Matching suspensions with injuries is a bad idea

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, Injuries, NHL,

Eric LindrossAs the NHL GMs debate in Florida about various issues in the game, including headshots, fans have been rampant throughout the internet letting their opinions on the issue be heard as well. Everybody seems to have an opinion, one of which being that offending players should be suspended until the injured player returns. While the idea behind that is decent, there are several holes in the idea that will prevent the GMs from giving it serious consideration. Here’s why.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NBA, NFL, NHL,

Mark SteenhuisHave you ever wondered what might happen if you combined football, basketball and hockey? You’d probably get lacrosse. The National Lacrosse League is a growing business in North America and with good reason; their brand of lacrosse mixes elements of other major North American sports with lacrosse to create an exciting on-field product that is attracting more and more fans each season. With 11 teams in the league and some of the most raucous crowds in attendance, the NLL is definitely something worth checking out.

Should the NHL adopt the Olympic style?

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Championship, NHL, Olympics,

Olympic HokceyWith one game left in the Olympic hockey tournament, it’s probably safe to say that we as fans are hungry for more of the Olympic style. The tournament in Vancouver over the past two weeks has shown us competitive game after competitive game, regardless of who the puck was dropping between, with fewer duds than anybody could have expected. We’ve seen upsets, comebacks, overtimes, and everything in between, and all of it without many of the things that plague the everyday NHL.

Once in a lifetime play sinks Leafs lower

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, NHL,

Sidney CrosbyWell there’s something you don’t see every day. In Saturday’s match between the Maple Leafs and the Penguins, Sergei Gonchar stunned the Blue and White faithful into complete and utter silence with a pair of second period goals. The first came after he rifled a shot that appeared to slam off the post and rebound out to the Leafs defenders, who pushed the puck up to Alexai Ponikarovsky, who, on a breakway, was taken down by none other than Gonchar, and was awarded a penalty shot. The play, however, went to review.

Selig proposes to make changes to MLB postseason

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, Front Office, MLB, Playoffs,

Bud SeligMajor League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig has promised some changes to the current format – more specifically the sluggish pace – of the MLB postseason. The argument is pretty clear. The MLB regular season schedule is an every day affair; but the MLB playoffs schedule resembles more of an NBA or NHL schedule. The World Series champion New York Yankees played a 162-game schedule in 180 days then played 15 playoff games in 31 days. That’s a drastic change to what the players and their bodies were used to. The Yankees and the Angels also had four days off between the ALDS and ALCS after each team swept their respective opponents.

The land of the lost… For goalies at least

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,

Martin BrodeurThe National Hockey League’s general managers have been discussing their game lately, making decisions on what changes are working, what needs improving, and what just plain needs to go. Not much is expected to change though, despite growing feelings to eliminate some of the more useless changes to the game, as the majority believe that the entire package of changes have equally contributed to the increased offense that the NHL has been striving to achieve for the last few years. Many of the newly introduced rules have involved eliminating play stoppages unless those were accompanied by a penalty of some kind.
