Update: Dreamhaven Books And Comics

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials,

DreamHaven

Dreamhaven Books And Comics, the legendary Minneapolis bookstore and mailorder company, is shutting its brick-and-mortar biz in early 2012.

At least that was the original announcement back in October.

Owner Greg Ketter clarified his position on a recent LiveJournal post:

“I am planning to eliminate regular store hours at the beginning of February 2012. I will periodically announce a "SALE DAY", likely a Saturday, to be open, perhaps once a month or so. I'll announce it any and every way I can and I'll make sure I have some special discounts and sales to entice people into the shop. As I've pointed out to many, many people, I'm not moving out of my current location or even rearranging the store. I own the building, the taxes are reasonable, I need someplace to store my books and work from, so I'm staying put. I just won't have the doors open regularly so that I can actually get some work done. I won't go into all of the frustrating aspects of minding an open but suffice to say, it does keep me from actually making a living. (sic)”

Items Du Jour: Teen Model Lawsuit, Cathy Horyn Gives FNO a Thumbs Down

Rihanna-- First there was the infamous Kate Moss "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" line; now Urban Outfitters is stirring up controversy with another printed t-shirt. This time, it's a racy photograph of then 15 year-old Hailey Clauson, whose parents are suing the retailer (and others who sell the shirt) for "destroying her reputation," of which she's demanding $28 million.

-- Rihanna showed up to a London event for her new fragrance, Reb'l Fleur, in a look from Antonio Berardi's recent resort collection. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.

-- NY Times fashion writer Cathy Horyn picks a fight with Fashion's Night Out, explaining in a recent blog post just how unproductive the event has now become, having transformed into a big block party more or less.

-- Just as the highly successful Alexander McQueen retrospective comes to a close, Grazia editor Melanie Rickey prompts a campaign calling all Londoners to arms, demanding that the retrospective come to McQueen's hometown.

Quote of the Day: Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble

If you're wondering where to invest your money now that Borders Books is in a state of freefall, you might hold off on putting some of your hard-earned money into the competition, Barnes & Noble.

“At the moment booksellers are something to avoid as an investment. Across the board, even for B&N, losses have exceeded expectations. Economics of digital business for B&N look worse than they should.”

-- Goldman Sachs analyst Matt Fassler speaking at Digital Book World.

Official Alert: Radio Shack changes name to The Shack

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Corporate News, Rumors,

Radio Shack

There has been many a rumor floating around the old intertubes that Radio Shack, long time electronics goods retail shop, would be changing its name to “The Shack” - not to be confused with Pizza Hut’s rebranding to “The Hut.” Well, as we thought, the rumors were certainly true. This attempt to be hip is going to be kicked off by The Shack Summer Netogether, an event running August 6th through the 8th, featuring two 17-foot laptops placed in New York’s Times Square and San Francisco’s Justin Herman Plaza. I don’t know if this new marketing strategy will work, but if it keeps The Shack from becoming like Circuit City, then it is worth a try.

Circuit City Files Chapter 11

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Misc. Tech,

Circuit City logoCircuit City just couldn’t save itself by selling off some of their stores and cutting back on employees during the last couple of months. They have filed for bankruptcy, making them the largest retailer to do so since Kmart in 2002. Reasons given include tougher vendor credit terms, a decrease in cash, and less consumer spending in their 556 outlets. They have even gone so far as to post a “We’re sorry” note on their site from CEO Jim Marcum. It may be a tough road back for the electronic chain and, while we hate to be blunt, while watching our local news we noticed that shoppers were grabbing some discounted items with glee.

Apple is Second in Music Sales

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Music,

NPD Group logoApple must be positively giddy at hearing the news that the iTunes Store is now the #2 retailer of music, second only to Wally World. The company claims that it sold 20 million tunes on Christmas Day alone. Based on an NPD Group survey, the top four also included Best Buy and Target. The study also concluded that about 29 million consumers, ages 36 to 50, acquired music legally. They were those that had recently purchased (or received) MP3 players. That was an increase of 5 mill over the year before. That’s a lot of assuaged guilt.

Retailers to Feature ATCS Tuners

FCC logoThere are now only 433 days to go until analog TV is no more. Eight retailers will begin to sell ATCS tuners to convert analog TVs to digital beginning in February. You can find them at Circuit City, Target, Sears, Kmart, RadioShack, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Sam’s Club. To facilitate that purchase, don’t forget to contact our helpful FCC who will be issuing two coupons worth $40.00 apiece. We suggest you not procrastinate, for although the program will dispense with over 33 million coupons, we suspect there are still at least that many analog TVs kicking around by 2009 that dont have satellite or cable. You can apply for your coupon after January 1 by contacting the FCC’s official site or calling 1-888-DTV-2009.
