With the Denon DP-200USB Turntable, you place a thumb drive into the front USB port, press “record,” and it operates automatically with no PC. There is also an option to transfer directly to MP3 player. Afterwords, the Trans Music Manager software allows split tracking and Gracenote access to retrieve album information. The DP-200USB turntable doesn’t just spin your records, but also rips them to the integrated USB drive. The accompanying software (this one is XP/Vista only for now, unfortunately) features Auto Track Divide, which recognizes silence between songs and will insert a new track tab for each track, and Audio Waveform Recognition, which will analyze a track’s first 15 seconds and search Gracenote for you. Stylistically, this unit looks like something straight out of my own rec room at my parents’ house. It’s available for $250.

Some Beatles Albums to be Reissued

Magical Mystery TourApple Corps and EMI have finally decided to release sonically upgraded reissues of 12 Beatles albums from the period between 1963 and 1970 in both stereo and mono. They will debut on Sept. 9, the same day the Beatles’ Rock Band video game is to come out. The collection will be on a total of 16 CDs and include “Rubber Soul” and “Magical Mystery Tour.” Downloadable versions have yet to have a release date but the matter may also be settled by the September deadline.

SlotmusicSanDisk has announced that they are releasing SlotMusic, apparently in an effort to boost sagging CD sales. Teaming up with Sony BMG, Universal, Warner, and EMI, the company will be selling their microSDs to the record labels who will then create the 1GB cards. Each is only 0.6 x 0.4-inches and can hold 320kbps MP3, DRM-free music. Best Buy and Wally World plan on selling the cards, if they can find them in their stockrooms.

Fred Meyer Chain Sells Vinyl Records

Abbey RoadWhen an employee tried to order a special CD-DVD of REM’s “Accelerate” for the Fred Meyer’s retail chain, he(she) mistakenly entered “LP.” Sure enough, vinyl records showed up at many of the stores. While some sent them back, others kept the 20 records and sold out the next day. Because of the good results, the chain, owned by the Kroger Co., are now selling them at 60 of its stores in the Alaska, Oregon, California, and Washington. Abbey Road tops their best-seller list. We think that is a fine idea, since we miss the sound of music on vinyl, and hope they give that employee a raise.
