Amazon Kindle Fire HD review (7-inch)

When Amazon announced the new Kindle Fire HD, it took a firm step into its transformation into a major player in the consumer electronics space. Jeff Bezos sold the fact that Amazon was in the unique position that allowed it to create a device that was about more than just the gadget itself--Kindle Fire is all about the services that are tied to it, and the Fire HD in particular is the cream of Amazon's tablet crop. Then the price was announced, and at $199 heads turned and ears perked. A high quality tablet that is completely tied in to Amazon's ecosystem with a great display, rock solid Wi-Fi, and stereo speakers for $199? Amazon Kindle Paperwhite offers illuminated touch display for $119

During this morning's Amazon Kindle event, the new Kindle Paperwhite was announced. This is the e-ink Kindle you've been waiting for is you've wanted to read in the dark. The Kindle Paperwhite sports an illuminated capacitive touchscreen front-lit display that is so subtle that it doesn't cause eye strain. Jeff Bezos made mention that the new Kindle Paperwhite offers 25% more contrast that previous models that used the Pearl e-ink displays, and has 62% higher resolution with its 212 pixels per inch. Equally impressive is that fact that it gets 8 weeks of battery life while using the light. It's all touch with this one, so don't expect any hardware buttons (other than a power button we'd guess,) but it's 15% more responsive than last year's Kindle Touch.
If you wanna get your hands on one, expect to pay $119 for the Wi-Fi Kindle Paperwhite, while the 3G model is priced at $179. They ship on October 1.

BeBook Mini eReader now available for $199

It would appear that the ebook reader competition is now heating up as Endless Ideas’ has just launched their BeBook Mini in the United States. It has a price tag of $199, and a 5-inch display. Unfortunately, there is no wireless connectivity, and so you’ll have to download via USB for content. However, it probably is one of the cheapest ereaders around.

Brother SV-100B Document Viewer

Brother’s SV-100B Document Viewer is a mere 15.5mm thick and weighs 600g. It has a 9.7-inch black and white display (1200x825) that can be viewed under direct sunlight and a miniSD card slot. A 2GB card can support up to 10,000 pages of information and its lithium-ion rechargeable battery will run up to 83 hours. At a size of 237×247×15.5 mm, Brother claims its reader has a life span of 5 years or 37 million pages.

Hearst to Launch Newspaper e-Reader

Publisher Hearst Corp. is intending to come out with an electronic reader for magazines and newspapers. While media group chief Kenneth Bronfin wouldn’t give out many details, he says that it is because of an investment that the company made with E Ink, the company that supplies Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s Reader electronic ink technology. Hearst will sell the e-readers to publishers and receive a portion of the revenue. Look for the new device, which should be about the size of a standard sheet of paper, later this year.

Bloglines Goes Bad

If you are a subscriber of Bloglines, you may have noticed the frequency of red exclamation marks and error messages. This is what is known as a broken system. They are no longer updating some of the feeds. We understand that they have received numerous complaints and whining, but our solution is to switch to another RSS reader, a simple enough process. Click “Export” on the bottom left, save the opml file and import it to the reader of your choice. In an Internet that has so many choices, we are allowed to say, “We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore.”
Update: It would appear that all that whining helped. Many of the feeds are updating again, however we are going to keep our backup feed all the same.
