1 vs. 100 Gets Full Order

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Prime Time, NBC, Ratings,

Bob Saget OK, I admit it. I watched 1 vs. 100—and it was pretty entertaining. For anyone who is tired of Deal or No Deal, this just may be the change of pace you need in a game show. With solid ratings, 1 vs. 100 was given the go-ahead by NBC, who ordered 10 additional episodes of the show (they already had 5 on the docket). “1 vs. 100 grabbed the public’s attention when it delivered solid ratings last Friday and staked out its own identity to become a great extension of our game-show franchise.” says Craig Plestis, head of alternative programming at NBC. 1 vs. 100 also brings Bog Saget back in the limelight and he does a fine job as host. If you’re unfamiliar with the premise, this game show puts one player up against a “mob” of 100 others—testing their knowledge of trivia. The individual player wins money for each correct answer as more members of the mob who answer incorrectly are eliminated from the game. The twist here is that if the individual player answers incorrectly, the remaining mob members split his or her earnings. The show premiered last week with almost 12.8 million viewers.

Friday Night Lights to Replace Studio 60 on October 30th

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, NBC, Ratings,

Friday Night LightsRuh-roh. This decision sounds like a bad sign for Studio 60—for one night only, Friday Night Lights will replace the Aaron Sorkin lovefest. NBC is trying to switch things up, and may just be trying to decide which one of these ratings stinkers will get the boot. On October 30th, during the 10 p.m. slot that Studio 60 normally fills, the football drama will get a shot at seeing whether it sinks or swims. Friday Night Lights will air following Heroes, NBC’s most successful freshman show. The new episode of Lights will air on October 30th, with a repeat of the episode in its usual 8 p.m. Tuesday time slot on October 31st. Studio 60 will take the week off—and for you Studio 60 fans, let’s hope it’s not more than a week. The much-hyped behind-the-scenes look at sketch comedy has steadily dropped viewers, now dipping below 9 million. People have a lot of complaints about the series, and I’m beginning to wonder if it will make it at all.

Friday Night Lights also seemed to be in danger of cancellation, but NBC ordered more scripts and now has the night switcheroo plan in place. The series has only averaged 6.6 million viewers.

Runaway Suffers Latest Cancellation

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, UPN, WB, Cancellations, Ratings,

RunawayThe axe just keeps falling—the latest casualty is the CW’s drama Runaway. With only four episodes aired, this new series barely got off the ground to provide itself. This is the one about a family on the run, when dad (Donnie Wahlberg) is accused of murder. Of course, it’s all just a misunderstanding, as he is really innocent. The series aired Mondays at 9:00 p.m., then CW moved Runaway to Sunday, but the move didn’t make any impact on ratings. CW will fill the slot with repeats until another replacement is announced. As you recall, CW came about when UPN and WB combined. Runaway was only one of two series from the newborn network. The other was the comedy The Game.

Happy Hour and ‘Til Death—Still Kickin’?

'Til DeathIn a surprise move, Fox has requested additional scripts of Happy Hour and ‘Til Death—two new sitcoms seemingly perched on the edge of cancellation. The ratings indicate that both of these freshman series are in jeopardy of the axe, but the network is willing to give them some more opportunities to make ‘em laugh. Media reports are saying that Fox wants three more scripts from each—and we’ll see where things go from there. Both shows air Thursday nights, with ‘Til Death averaging about 6.9 million viewers. Happy Hour averaged under 5.6 million viewers in its three airings. Both went on hiatus because of baseball games on Fox, while ‘Til Death took additional time off when Brad Garrett put the brakes on production because of the quality of the scripts.

Salma Hayek Brings Her Beauty to Ugly Betty

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Ratings,

Salma HayekIt was only a matter of time, I suppose, before Salma Hayek would step front and center on the show she executive produces, Ugly Betty. Until now, she’s had some fleeting moments on the show in a background soap opera. Her role will encompass multiple episodes, according to an ABC announcement today. Look for Hayek in her first guest star gig on the November 2nd episode—she will appear on three more episodes during November. Hayek will play Sofia Reyes, “a newcomer to the Mode scene who will leave a lasting impression on Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius) and Betty Suarez (America Ferrera).” This announcement comes on the heels of the news that ABC ordered a full season of the popular freshman show. It’s not too late to jump on the bandwagon—this is a fun show, and as I reported earlier, America Ferrera brings so much heart to the Betty character.

CBS Drama ‘Smith’ Canceled

Ray Liotta Now that the fall schedule is in full swing, one thing is certain—there will be casualties. Smith, the much-hyped CBS drama with big headliners Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen, is the first show to be officially canceled. The show, which aired on Tuesday nights, followed Liotta as the leader of a bunch of thieves. CBS said on Friday that the show is now off the schedule and will be replaced by reruns of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Minds. The word ‘cancel’ never was uttered, but the show’s producers give no guarantee that the show will come back. The viewership was so-so, with Nielsen Media Research reporting only 8.4 million viewers. The competition was tough too—up against Law & Order: SVU and Boston Legal.

The New Adventures of Old Christine Given Full Season

Julia Louis-DreyfusJulia Louis-Dreyfus is sittin’ pretty now that her Emmy-winning show The New Adventures of Old Christine has been ordered for a full season. Originally, CBS ordered 13 episodes for the second season, but with ratings on the upswing, the order was increased to 22 episodes. Christine was a mid-season sitcom last year—and many wondered if Louis-Dreyfus could shake the “Seinfeld Curse.” The last episode averaged 13.6 million viewers, which was an increase from the average of the first season, at 12.5 million. While I’m not a regular watcher, I do stumble across it from time to time—Louis-Dreyfus does a great job; I’ve been a fan of hers since her Saturday Night Live days.

In other CBS news, The Class and How I Met Your Mother will swap time slots, with How I Met Your Mother now taking on the 8:00 slot and The Class moving to 8:30. The Class could apparently use the bump from the popular How I Met Your Mother as a lead-in.

Too Many TVs? Nielsen Research Tells the Tale

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: ABC, Cable, CBS, FOX, NBC, UPN, WB, Cable/Satellite, News, Ratings,

TV A recent Nielsen Media Research study found that the average American home has more TV sets than people. The average number of people per home is 2.55, while the number of TVs averages 2.73. The availability of flat-screen TVs impacts the results, since it’s easier than ever to put sets most anywhere.

The research shows that half of American homes have three or more TVs, with 19 percent having just one. Compared to 1975, the number of single sets per home was 57 percent and having three or more was a minority—just 11 percent.

Nielsen also reports that the average person watches four hours and 35 minutes of TV per day. What are people watching? The ratings over the years have shown a lot of change with the multitude of channels available, so the the big networks’ ratings have shown a steady decline.

Nip/Tuck Doctors Get More Dollars

Posted by Jill Tecler Categories: Prime Time, Cable, Nip/Tuck, Talent,

Nick TuckLucky for Dr. Christian Troy and Dr. Sean McNamara that the villainous Carver’s reach was unable to get to their bank accounts.  Yesterday, cable network FX announced that in light of record ratings last season, series stars Julian McMahon and Dylan Walsh will both be awarded with substantial raises this year, bringing their total earnings for the upcoming fourth season to close to $1.8 million each.  While the specifics related to the dollar amount have not been confirmed, it’s believed that this increase is almost twice as much as each actor received for the third season, where memorable moments outside of the Carver included the return of Gina, a pregnant Mrs. Santa Claus, ax-wielding Mr. Alderman and a gorilla named Kiki.
