OmniFocus for iPhone 1.5 features
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Productivity, App Updates, Above $10
OmniFocus for iPhone, our favorite task management app, is set for an update. OmniFocus 1.5 will require iPhone 3.0, as it takes advantage of some of the new iPhone OS features like Cut, Copy, and Paste, as well as the new Map API. Here’s a look at some of the new features you can expect from OmniFocus for iPhone 1.5:
- OmniFocus now displays nearby contexts using a map. Touch a pin to see all the tasks in the corresponding context.
- You can Cut, Copy, and Paste entire actions by holding down a checkbox in an action list. You can paste into an empty list by holding the “No Actions” text.
- You can search through all your projects and actions using the new Search screen.
- In Projects and Contexts screens, you can select All Actions to show a grouped list of all actions.
- You can set up repeating actions and projects using the new Repeat screen.
- Action lists now display each action’s due date.
- Web links in notes now open inside OmniFocus (rather than launching Safari).
- Send Feedback now sends email inside OmniFocus (rather than launching Mail).
- We’ve added experimental support for landscape mode and undo; both can be enabled under Settings.
We want this. Now. You can download OmniFocus for iPhone from the App Store.

OmniFocus for iPhone 1.2 released
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Productivity, App Updates, Above $10
We always have to give a shout when OmniFocus for iPhone, the one iPhone app that we truly could not live without, gets updated.
- The Nearby view now displays each context as soon as its distance is determined, rather than waiting to figure out the distance to each context before showing any results. It also scrolls much faster.
- Checkboxes are much easier to touch.
- When creating a new action, the keyboard appears immediately rather than sliding in after the screen.
- On the home screen, Settings have moved to the Info button in the bottom right corner.
- The Reset Database button in Settings will now reset the saved sync password in addition to the database, and will then take you back to the original welcome screen.
- Syncing automatically compacts the database on a regular basis, but when syncing is not enabled there’s now a Compact Database button in Settings. (There’s also some text there indicating how many tasks are stored in how many zip files, so you can tell whether your database could benefit from compacting.)
- Added underlying support for the new autocomplete settings for projects and groups which are coming in OmniFocus v1.6 for Mac.
- Actions without contexts are no longer considered unavailable.
The OmniFocus for iPhone 1.2 update is available now in the App Store. As with all OmniFocus updates, be sure to synchronize your data with MobileMe or your WebDAV server before updating, just in case anything goes awry.

Keynote Remote app introduced by Apple
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Productivity, Apple, $0.99

Apple just announced their latest contribution to the App Store this morning in their MaWorld 2009 keynote. Keynote Remote is the official method of controlling your Keynote presentations from your iPhone or iPod touch. In order to advance slides, you swipe across the screen. You are also able to see your presenter notes beneath your current slide, and you can preview your next slide by turning the device to landscape mode. You can pair your iPhone or iPod touch to any Mac with Keynote ‘09 installed. In fact, that is an important point to bring up - Keynote Remote only works with the newly announced Keynote ‘09, part of the iWork ‘09 productivity suite. You can download it now for $0.99.

iWork ‘09 announced at MacWorld 2009
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Software
Aside from the new iLife ‘09 suite that was announced this morning, Apple is also showing off the new version of iWork, iWork ‘09. Here is a look at some of the highlights:
Keynote: New to Keynote, you can now identify objects within slides, and Keynote will take care of moving them around between slides. There is a Magic Move feature, which will do everything automatically, including resizing and rotating an object. There are new animations as well, featuring fly-ins on charts and graphs, rotating and grow on bars, zooming in on charts, etc. New deck themes have also been added.
As a side note, there is also a new Keynote remote control app available in the App Store that will allow you to use your iPhone or iPod touch to control your Keynote presentations. It will cost $0.99.
Pages: Pages ‘09 gets a few new features. First up is a fullscreen view that makes everything else on your screen disappear. Basically, you get the document you are typing on, and everything else fades to black, to help you focus. There are also new dynamic outlines, which let you outline what you are going to write before you actually start writing, and you can switch back and forth to reorganize your thoughts. Pages also gets a new mail merge feature, which works with Numbers, connecting to tables, and it also works with MathTpye and EndNote. Oh, and you get 40 new themes.
Numbers: Numbers 09 picks up easy formula writing, advanced chart options (like mixed chart types, error bars, trend lines) and new table categories. If you have a Pages document that is linked to data from a Numbers document, if you update it in Numbers, it is automatically updated in Pages. Nice. Lastly, Numbers also gets theme templates, which is rare for a spreadsheet application.
iWork ‘09 ships today, and sells for $79, or $99 for a family pack that is good on up to five Macs. If you purchase it with a new Mac, it costs just $49.

OmniFocus for iPhone gets updated to 1.1.2
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Productivity, App Updates, Above $10

One of my absolute favorite iPhone apps, OmniFocus, just received a small update, meant to kill a few bugs. In case you have yet to give it a try, OmniFocus is an organizational tool solely meant to keep you on task, focused, while maintaining peace of mind that you aren’t forgetting anything. It’s configurable in so many ways, that just about anyone is able to fit it into their workflow. There is an iPhone version, as well as a desktop version for OS X, and the two can sync together. Anyhow, here are the details of the recent update for OmniFocus for iPhone:
Changes in the minor v1.1.1 update:
Fixed a bug which could leave the user at a blank screen after adding a new item.
Fixed a bug which caused the app to be unresponsive after converting an action to a project.
Fixed a few places where English was still visible in the Japanese translation.Changes in the minor v1.1.2 update (released November 13, 2008):
Updated the Settings icon to avoid potential confusion with the iPhone’s built-in Settings application.
As we said before, if you haven’t already, you owe it to yourself to check out OmniFocus.

While perusing del.icio.us bookmarks over the holiday, I came across technology and productivity blog Codswallop’s fantastic Freelancer’s Toolset. Yoav Ezer posted this list of 100 tools for freelancers back in May, and barring a few recent developments in the web app universe, it’s exhaustive and incredibly helpful. With apps covering organization, calendaring and to-do’s, money, storage, project management and productivity, writing and design, security and privacy, mobility and contact, marketing and networking, business and legal, contact and feedback, website tools, printing and packaging, revenue building and giving, and more - just about anything that a freelancer can use on the web to further their business can be found on this list.

CES 2007 Video: CardScan Business Card Scanner
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Gizmatic, Short Bytes, Accessories, CES, CES 2007, Features, PC / Laptop, Peripherals, Videocasts
At an event like CES, business cards flow like water rushing from the fountains at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas and managing them can be a challenge. Rubbermaid has brought to market an improvement to their CardScan line, a portable business card scanner that makes importing the contact information from business cards a snap. Heck, it even prints labels and postage. Check the video for the full scoop.
