Drake Dropped by PR Firm?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Music, Rants, Rumors,

DrakeDrake has parted ways with his his PR team.

The "Hold On, We're Going Home" hitmaker was allegedly dropped by his representatives at ID-PR, shortly after complaining about being ditched from the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in favor of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman.

A source told Billboard.com that the firm, which handled publicity for his third album Nothing Was The Same, as well as his current Would You Like A Tour?, which wraps in London on March 26, initiated the split after the 27-year-old star posted a series of furious tweets, which have since been deleted, about the magazine's decision not to feature him on the cover after the Capote star's tragic death from an apparent heroin overdose last month.

Another source told the New York Post's Page Six that the rapper's comments were "the last straw," as he previously had a lot of drama behind-the-scenes with ID-PR and allegedly hadn't shown up for several other magazine shoots and TV appearances the firm had arranged. "It's a shame that someone with so much talent is surrounded by kids who are burning bridges left and right," the source said.

Kevin Smith’s Southwest Airlines Rants Continue

Kevin Smith

Warning to companies everywhere: Don’t ever piss off popular celebrities with a Smodcast and a Twitter account.

According to director Kevin Smith (Clerks), he was asked to get off a flight from Oakland to Burbank yesterday because he was deemed too big to fit into his single seat. This Southwest Airlines ejection has since turned into a PR disaster for the low-cost airline.

Despite his insistence that he fit comfortably in his space (he says he “fit between the arm rests & was able to buckle his seat belt w/o an extender”), Smith stated through his active Twitter account that he was told that he “wasn’t going to be allowed to sit there” because he was “a safety risk.”

Dell Uses Celebs for Xmas Hype

YoursIsHere

Dell has decided on a new “Star Power” strategy to get you what you want this season, as long as it is one of their products. After you create your wish list on YoursIsHere and set up a virtual piggy bank through a PayPal account, celebrities Burt Reynolds, Chuck Liddell, Brooke Burke, Estelle Harris, Ice-T, or Vivica A. Fox will try to obtain it for you. Create a widget on social networking sites and watch the coinage mount up. We like the concept, but think we will wait until it is duplicated by Apple or Sony.

E3 2007: The Big Three: Who “Won” E3?

E3 2007 winnerIt always seems a bit silly to declare a “winner” of E3. It’s just so juvenile. This is a complex industry that can’t be distilled down to the simple question of “who beat whom.”

But we just can’t help it, can we?

Comparing the three keynotes this year, however, really is a grab-bag of possible outcomes. All three offered something interesting, and picking a single “winner” this year more than ever depends how you define “winning.”

My rundown is after the break.

Sony’s PR Head Talks PS3 Launch

Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: PlayStation 3,

Playstation 3 Dave Karraker, Sony’s new head of corporate communications recently gave Gamasutra a lengthy interview about his history and the upcoming Playstation 3 launch. Karraker’s industry experience included work for Crystal Dynamics, 3DO, and Sega of America. Prior to working at Sony, Karraker worked with Marth Stewart during her prison stay; this type of experience under pressure may be a benefit when trying to work with some of the foot-in-mouth problems some of Sony’s executives seem to have.

Karraker discusses some of these issues in the interview, particularly in reference to some of Ken Kutaragi’s more outrageous statements. He also talks specifically about what he feels Sony brings to the table, including 1080p and Sony’s vision for their online network.

Karraker states that Sony is pushing a more open network where basic functionality is provided by Sony, and third parties will have the option to either provide their own support for matchmaking, ranking, and achievements, work with a third-party provider like Xfire or Gamespy, or work with Sony’s implementation. Not having a universal experience may hurt Sony when compared to Microsoft’s Xbox Live. However, Microsoft’s relative lack of flexibility is not without its drawbacks, either; witness Epic’s problems providing party-based ranked matches online for Gears of War.

Also discussed was Sony’s downloadable game content. Here again, Karraker can’t seem to resist poking at the offerings from Microsoft and Nintendo, stating:

I think what you won’t see is just a flood of games that some might consider to be throw-away games. We’re going to populate the store with true, good games that show off the hardware, so it’s not just going to be a bunch of redos and hacks.

For being Sony’s official mouthpiece for corporate communications, this interview seems to be remarkably straightforward. Sure, for the most part Karraker toes the party line, but there are some good insights in the interview.
