Brandon Flowers Had to Defend America

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Artist News, Gossip, Alternative, Pop, Rock,

Brandon FlowersBrandon Flowers often had to defend his home country of America because of President Bush.

The Las Vegas musician said people didn't like the fact he was from the States when George W. Bush became president in 2001, the year the band formed:

"Well, I feel the need sometimes to defend where I'm from. When we first came out as a band, Bush was president and there was a strong anti-American sentiment. I felt it as we were traveling the world, so it made me want to push back a little bit, because we have good people with big hearts. We've seen it shift and change since Obama became president but I was young and trying to understand it all."

And the "Mr Brightside" hitmaker said he still represents his native America but has fallen in love with Europe. "I have these two sides that are constantly fighting. There's that desire to represent where I'm from, that dusty American road pushing against the fantasy world and European music that I grew up with. Sometimes when they meet in one of our songs, like 'When You Were Young,' it's great," he continued.

Cher Blasts Thanksgiving

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Music,

CherCher does not celebrate Thanksgiving.

The "I Got You Babe" singer doesn't mark the traditional holiday - held on the fourth Thursday in November in the States to celebrate a good harvest, which has its roots in a three day feast between pilgrims and Native Americans in 1621 - because she sees it as the point where the oppression of the nation's native population started.

When asked by a fan on Twitter whether she celebrated, Cher responded, "I don't. For me and my family, it's a day when everyone is free for dinner and a movie, not to celebrate the beginning of a great crime." When asked to elaborate, the singer - who has Native American Cherokee roots - added, "Stealing land from a people who believed owning land was like owning sky! We gave them blankets laced with smallpox."

Russell Brand: I’ve Never Voted

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Television, Rants, Videos,

Russell Brand has never voted. Despite taking over political magazine New Statesman as guest editor for one issue, the comedian admits he has never cast a single vote in a UK election because he doesn't believe in the British government system.

Speaking to BBC program Newsnight, he told host Jeremy Paxman, "I don't vote. I don't get my authority from this pre-existing paradigm which is quite narrow and only serves a few people. I look elsewhere for alternatives that might be of service to humanity. Alternate means or systems." When an incredulous Jeremy questioned his capabilities to discourse on politics, Russell insisted he was passionate about finding an alternative system which wouldn't leave the working class "disillusioned" and "despondent."

Scarlett Johansson Won’t Rule Out Political Career

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Movies, Features,

Scarlett JohanssonScarlett Johansson is debating a move into politics.

The 28-year-old actress - who was a vocal supporter of Barack Obama during his US presidential re-election campaign - has refused to rule out an expanded role. Speaking in the October issue of Harper's Bazaar, she said, "Do I imagine myself having a full-on political career? That seems like a stretch. But who knows? I don't limit the possibilities. If I have more time, I may be able to lend a bigger voice to politics. I never close the door on those kinds of things."

Such a career move wouldn't be a big surprise coming from the Avengers star, whose family taught her the importance of being "politically active." She explained, "I come from a politically active family. To be an active member of the community, to be a responsible citizen and to engage politically have always been part of my awareness and part of my life. More than anything else, I believe that if everyone exercised the right to vote, the right choice would be made by the nation as a whole."

White House responds to petition, says cell phone unlocking should be legalized

White House Petition Legalize Unlocking

It started as a petition needing only 100,000 signatures requesting that the White House make an official response to the right of cellphone owners to lawfully unlock their cellphones. The Library Of Congress deemed unlocking one's cellphone illegal in October 2012; a ruling that would take affect in the new year. Now, the White House has officially announced that they too agree with the 114K petitioners. It recommends that cellphones be unlocked as long as the customers first meet their carrier's contractual agreement. The White House has even included tablets to the list of devices. Consequently, the Library of Congress has agreed and support the review their policy, which was strongly urged by the FCC.

"The White House agrees with the 114,000+ of you who believe that consumers should be able to unlock their cell phones without risking criminal or other penalties. In fact, we believe the same principle should also apply to tablets, which are increasingly similar to smart phones. And if you have paid for your mobile device, and aren’t bound by a service agreement or other obligation, you should be able to use it on another network. It’s common sense, crucial for protecting consumer choice, and important for ensuring we continue to have the vibrant, competitive wireless market that delivers innovative products and solid service to meet consumers’ needs."  - White House Administration
