Fan backs Santana’s bold claim

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Johan SantanaI wrote an opinion story a few days ago about how Mets pitcher Johan Santana blatantly told the media that he was the best pitcher in his division and how that was wrong. A reader left a comment calling me an idiot saying I didn’t know anything about Santana and that he’s the highest paid in his division, as if that warrants him calling himself the best. The reader then said that Santana was asked a stupid question to begin with. Regardless of the ignorance of the commenter’s words, I began wondering if there was, in fact, any merit to his opinions. There aren’t.

Santana claims he’s best in the NL East

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Johan SantanaIs there anything worse than a cocky athlete? When Mets ace Johan Santana was asked who he thought the best pitcher in the National League East was, he took a moment to “think” about his answer before saying, “Santana… simple.” Not only is that a slap in the face to the other teams in his division, but also to his teammates like Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and Francisco Rodriquez. Of course fans want the best players to play on their team, they just don’t want those players to say they’re the best.

Josh Johnson to stay in Florida

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,

Josh JohnsonJosh Johnson isn’t going anywhere. The All-Star right-hander will suit up for the Florida Marlins in 2010 after GM Michael Hill told the media that he can say “with certainty” that Johnson will be a Marlin on Opening Day 2010. While the two parties discussed a contract extension without success recently, it seems that Johnson’s immediate future is secure. He is still controllable for the next two seasons, and while Florida tried to restructure towards the postseason, players like Johnson and teammate Hanley Ramirez are the guys to focus on.

Dotel tests free agency… again

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, Front Office, MLB,

Octavio DotelHappy birthday to Octavio Dotel. He turns 35 years old today, and is now in a position to earn himself a very satisfying birthday present. After having spent the last two years with the Chicago White Sox, he is now temporarily without a team name on his jersey. Dotel, a right-handed reliever, has filed for free agency and will now soak in the offers from other clubs – and he will get his fair share of offers.

Roy Halladay sweepstakes getting thicker

Roy HalladayThe Roy Halladay Sweepstakes Part Two have just became more interesting.  With rumors swirling that the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have both shown interest, joined by reports from the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week, it seems like the Toronto Blue Jays – controller of the most sought after non-free agent – may have a tough decision ahead of them this winter. Reports say that the rumors now include the Chicago Cubs. The sad part is that this is not news. Any team with any interest in winning in 2010 is going to be looking at Halladay. The only question to be asked is who can afford him?

AL Rookie of the Year - Andrew Bailey

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Andrew BaileyAndrew Bailey has just highlighted a personal accomplishment on a team marred by lowlights in 2009. He is the newly honored 2009 American League Rookie of the Year. Representing the Oakland Athletics, Bailey is the third Oakland player to win the award in the last six seasons. With 13 first place votes, six second place and five third place for a total of 88 points, Bailey was hardly challenged by any other American League rookie. The only others close to challenging Bailey for the award was shortstop Elvis Andrus from the Texas Rangers (65 points), and Detroit Tigers right-handed starter Rick Porcello (64 points).

Joel Pineiro gets it done

Joel Pineiro

Here’s a fact you probably don’t know: Joel Pineiro is the third-best pitcher in baseball. Sitting behind dual-aces Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter on the St. Louis Cardinals’ starting pitcher depth chart, Pineiro has racked up a career year, worthy of top spot in the rotation on many other teams throughout baseball.

To this point in the season, Pineiro has a 15-11 record with a 3.24 ERA over an amazing 203 innings pitched. The only disappointing thing for those numbers is how they stack up against Wainwright and Carpenter, who each have more wins with a lower ERA. Now while his numbers do make him look like one of the best the National League has to offer, the journey for Pineiro hasn’t been easy.

Carafe Prevents Melt Down

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

Kufra PitcherThe Kufra Pitcher is almost too perfect a concept. Holding 72 ounces of liquid, the 8.5 x 6.5-inch Italian Glass carafe features a removable plastic tube insert for 8 to 10 ice cubes which screws into the bottom of its plastic lid to keep your liquids from becoming watered-down. Frankly, for the modest price of $13.95, plastic stirrer included, we much prefer that than our usual popping our containers of lemonade in the freezer and forgetting about them until they explode.
