Comic Book Jobs: Who’s Hiring? Marvel and Disney
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Movies, Marvel Comics
Marvel Studios out here on the West Coast must be the happening spot for new hires. This is the second job listing in a week or so, and I originally missed this one because it’s listed through Marvel Comics’ parent company, Disney.
Marvel Studios is looking for a VP in Communication and Distribution in Animation in Manhattan Beach, CA.
You’ll report to the Executive VP, Head of TV, so big props to you, Mr. Powerful. You’ll be working on the “development of objectives and strategic priorities for Marvel Animation and its individual programs in each market around the world.”
This sounds like it’s definitely a suit-and-tie, travel, Bluetooth and buzzword kind of job, so you’ll need not only the experience but the slanguage to back it up. You might even get a nice iPad out of the deal. And if any of you do get the job, let’s talk, because I need a new executive friend in animation.
At the other end of the world, though still part of the vast Disney empire, is Disney Worldwide Publishing which is looking for a “Global Editor.”

Captain Swing by Warren Ellis & Raulo Caceres
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Editorials, Independent
Yo-ho-ho. If you love your pirates and you’re a little bit burned out by Johnny Depp and the many, many Pirates of the Caribbean, you might be looking for something a little different in the “pirate” category. If you can expand your definition to include Bow Street Runners, flintlocks, and “flying things that aren’t supposed to fly?” then February 2010 has something for you. It’s the start of a new four-issue mini-series by Warren Ellis (Supergod; No Hero) and Raulo Caceres (Gravel; Crecy) from Avatar called Captain Swing And The Electrical Pirates of Cindery Island.
Described as “an electrical romance of a pirate utopia thwarted,” Captain Swing is set in London, 1830. That would be the Warren Ellis London of 1830 in which copper Charlie Gravel starts seeing things, including the legendary Spring-Heeled Jack. I love the Bow Street Runners. They figure prominently in the mystery novels of Bruce Alexander (Blind Justice) and Richard Falkirk (Blackstone), and I’m curious to see what this new incarnation will be like.
This is an Avatar book, so expect some cover variants and a retailer incentive, but best of all, it’s a new Ellis mini-series and I’m looking forward to it.

Disney/Panasonic to offer movies on microSD
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Cell Phones, Home Entertainment, Movies

I don’t know about you, but I use my microSD reader just about everyday to retrieve information from my camera, so it stands to reason that movies should be released onto microSDs.
This is exactly what Disney and Panasonic have teamed up to do. These will “accompany DVDs that hold similar movie content, giving viewers more options when it comes to viewing their recently purchased movie”.
So far, plans have been in effect for DVD + microSD bundles of Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure, to be released sometime in November.

Hey, remember that HP HDX Dragon PC that we unboxed a few months ago? Well, HP has gone and upgraded the specs on that puppy, and they want us to give one of them to you guys. Not just the computer, but a few Blu-ray movies, a few PC games, and a bunch of software too. All in all, if you were to purchase everything we are giving away on your own, you’d end up spending somewhere around $5,196.00. Yeah, I said it. Go ahead and read that again.
No, here is the real kicker. Now only are we here at Gear Live giving away one of these 1080p beasts, but thirty other sites are also going to be giving away the exact same package, including our friends over at ArsTechnica, Lockergnome, JKOnTheRun, and Jake Ludington’s MediaBlab. That means you have 31 chances to win. Seriously. That’s why we are calling it 31 Days of the Dragon.
Now, each site is going to set their own criteria for how they are going to run things, and we will be announcing what we will be doing soon. Our giveaway date for the HDX Dragon is June 7, 2008. You’d better keep it locked here, peeps. Oh, and anyone in the world is eligible to win.
Hit the break for the full scoop on everything we are giving away, which other sites are also giving these away, and an unboxing video of the HDX Dragon.
