Lauren Bacall: Hollywood’s Glamour Girl Awarded Special Oscar
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Awards, Celeb News,
She starred opposite Marilyn Monroe, Lionel Barrymore, Gary Cooper, Paul Newman, John Wayne, Henry Fonda, and Bogie…to name just a few. She was considered a quintessential glamour girl, she of smoky voice and killing one-liners. As the wife of Humphrey Bogart, she would have been Hollywood royalty anyway, but Lauren Bacall became a movie queen in her own right as early as 1945.
And she’s still working. Bacall recently appeared in Eve, has already wrapped on Wide Blue Yonder (it’s in post-production) and is currently working on Carmel (scheduled for a 2010 release). Appearing in more than fifty films, Lauren Bacall was nominated for an Academy Award only once in her career. This nod was given for her role in The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), though she lost to Juliette Binoche (Best Supporting Actress, The English Patient).
Now, she’s getting another long-awaited nod from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Bacall will be awarded with an honorary Oscar to commemorate her four-decade Hollywood career, specifically for her “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
Well, Bacall probably qualifies for all of that.

Beloved Hollywood Actor Karl Malden Dead at 97
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Disney, Celeb News, Obituaries,
You may remember him from a couple of Marlon Brando movies, or perhaps from a Disney classic or two, but the truth is that Karl Malden’s celebrated career encompassed more than fifty films. He was not a leading man, but he was definitely an acting powerhouse. Now, Malden’s fire has been snuffed out at the age of 97.
The actor died, surrounded by his family, of natural causes at his Brentwood home. It was a quiet end for the man with the resonant voice, who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in A Streetcar Named Desire (Marlon Brando’s first major film; actress Vivien Leigh won her second Best Actress Oscar for the same movie).

Dustin Lance Black Responds to Internet Scandal
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Movies, Hook-ups, Photos, Oops Photos, Sex Tapes, Rumors,
Why do bad things happen to good people? This has been quite the year for Big Love writer Dustin Lance Black—one moment he’s being honored in Los Angeles by gay youth-mentoring group LifeWorks, and the next moment his private photos are blasted all over the internet.
The writer, whose Milk script nabbed him the 2009 Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, has been a supporter of the LGBT movement and advocate of safe sex. Intimate photos of Black and an ex-boyfriend engaging in what appears to be risky sex were leaked to photo agency Starzlife the other day.
In response to the leak, Black told E! Online’s Mark Malkin the following:

Jennifer Hudson’s Behind-the-Scenes Idol Appearance
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Spoilers,
Jennifer Hudson will, at long last, return to the American Idol stage this week. The only trouble is, most of us won’t see it for a good, long while.
The Oscar-winning actress won’t be featured until after the live broadcast has ended. Hudson’s performance will be taped, not to be aired until some distant future episode FOX has yet to name. According to reports, ticket vouchers for this week’s results show promise “special performances by Jennifer Hudson and Ruben Studdard.” Studdard’s appearance has been confirmed by Idol.

Heath gets the gold!
Posted by David Torres Categories: Editorials,
Well, I was a nit nervous that there might be a surprise and that Heath Ledger wouldn’t get the Oscar, but he did.
Congratulations to Heath Ledger. Your performance was truly remarkable and it will be remembered in the comic book world for many years to come. Thank you so much and may you Rest in Peace.
Ledger gets the nod, but Dark Knight comes up short!
Posted by David Torres Categories: Editorials, Movies,
The Oscar nominations were announced today. To no one’s surprise, Heath Ledger received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in “The Dark Knight”. Also to no one’s surprise, the film itself did not get any other major award nominations such as Best Picture, Best Director, or Best Screenplay.
As long as Academy voters look at comic films with disdain, no matter how good they are; no matter how many positive reviews they get; no matter how much money they make; they will never ever give a film like “The Dark Knight” respect. As comic fans, I think we shouldn’t care anymore. If we enjoy these films and watch them over and over again, who cares if they don’t get the Oscar.
Congratulations to Heath and good luck.

No comic book films for Best Picture at Golden Globes, Ledger however gets a nod
Posted by David Torres Categories: Editorials, Movies,
I wasn’t expecting “Iron Man” to get a Best Picture nomination from the Golden Globes, but I thought maybe “Dark Knight” would get one. Sadly, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not give a Best Picture nomination to either “Iron Man” or “Dark Knight”. We don’t normally see films outside of the Hollywood drama category get a nomination for Best Picture. The original “Star Wars” got a nomination for Best Picture from the Golden Globes and the Oscars. It lost the Oscar to “Annie Hall” that year in case you were wondering. Which is shocking in itself because it’s a comedy and comedies don’t normally win Oscars.

Dark Knight Set to Re-Release in January

Warner Bros. now has plans to re-release Christopher Nolan’s record-breaking Batman sequel this January.
While I initially heard the news of The Dark Knight‘s re-release plan, I was excited to see that it may have a second chance to break Titanic‘s record; however, I was met with disappointment to discover that their motives linked to more materialistic goal named Oscar.
January is the prime voting season for the Academy Awards, and those determined folks at Warner Bros. don’t want anyone over there to forget about that impressive summer blockbuster of theirs.

Maher’s Religulous Already Creating Oscar Buzz
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Lionsgate, Documentary, Trailers, Upcoming Releases,
After much delay, Bill Maher’s Religulous will finally make it to theaters October 3, 2008. The trailer is out and early reviews are giving the documentary high praise.
Maher, an avowed atheist, hits city streets in the film in an attempt to learn more of the true nature of religion. He converses with every day citizens, over-the-top zealots and many experts to talk about God - so fundamental to so many belief systems.
Already the media is talking about an Oscar nomination, some saying that Religulous is sure to get a nod in the documentary film category. According to Maher, the title of the film comes from the words “ridiculous” and “religious.”
