Wednesday Ratings: Idol Takes Back the Night

American Idol may have lost to the Winter Olympics last Wednesday, but there is no way the program would let that happen two weeks in a row. Yesterday’s performances from the Top 12 men helped the program take back the viewers and the demos.
8pm
- American Idol (22.8 million, 8.6/23 in 18-49) was still down 2.2 million from one week ago.
- The Vancouver Olympics (19.5 million, 5.2/14) plunged by 9.8 million.
- The New Adventures of Old Christine* (4.4 million, 1.1/3) lost 500,000.
- Modern Family* (3.9 million, 1.2/3) fell by 1.2 million.
- The Middle* (4 million, 1.4/4) gave up 800,000.
- Gary Unmarried* (3.4 million, 0.9/2) shaved off 1 million.
- Life Unexpected* (1 million, 0.4/1) slid by 300,000.

Canada and US women play for gold in hopeful preview of men’s game

It was the match everybody wanted to see. Sort of. Team Canada took on the USA for gold in the women’s ice hockey and the Canadians prevailed for the third-straight Olympics, squeezing out a 2-0 win. The game packed Canada Hockey Place, and millions more tuned in to watch, but while the women delivered one of the most spectacular hockey games you’ll ever see, the long hair flowing under every helmet and facemasks covering eyes wearing eyeliner gave things a different feel.

Agosta breaks Olympic records

Another record has been broken in Vancouver. Meghan Agosta, forward for Team Canada’s women’s ice hockey unit, has scored nine goals in four games for her country, breaking the record at the Olympics. Agosta scored a hat trick in Canada’s 18-0 win over Slovakia, two more in the 10-1 win over Switzerland, and another hat trick over Sweden 13-1. In the 5-0 semi-final win against Finland on Monday night, Agosta netted another goal to bring her running total to nine.

Tuesday Ratings: Lost Raises Its Game

Okay, so it didn’t make a significant jump. But given the music and sports competition, Lost should be happy with its slight bump last night. It’s all about the little things, right?

- Approximately 24 million watched ladies’ night on American Idol (8.9/22 in 18-49).
- The Vancouver Games (6.1/17) had 22.1 million doing triple Axels.
- NCIS* (11.5 million, 2.3/6) did about the same.
- Lost* (4.4 million, 1.6/4) added on 200,000.
- 90210* (0.3/1) settled for 780,500.

Monday Ratings: Minor Slip for Winter Games

Are viewers simply not interested in ice dancing? Or were they simply caught up in The Bachelor? Whatever the reason, last night’s coverage got beat by 2006’s Torino games for the first time since the Vancouver edition started.

- The Winter Olympics (21.1 million, 5.4/14 in 18-49) was off 1.4 million from four years ago.
- The Bachelor special (11.2 million, 3.9/10) only lost 300,000.
- House* (6.1 million, 2.1/6) fell by 700,000.
- How I Met Your Mother* (6.1 million, 2.2/6) gave up 300,000.
- Accidentally on Purpose* (5.3 million, 1.9/5) shaved off 200,000.
- One Tree Hill (2.2 million, 1.0/3) raised another 300,000.

Sunday Ratings: Undercover Boss Jumps Over the Competition

CBS chose wisely when they picked their post-Super Bowl time slot winner. Outside of the sports competition on NBC, the action during the 9:00 time slot was clearly on CBS. New reality series Undercover Boss had the best viewers and demos of the night.

- The Winter Olympics (5.7/14 in 18-49) attracted 22.4 million spectators for NBC.
- The Amazing Race (2.9/7) got 9.1 million charting the course.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (2.5/6) nailed down 8 million.
- The Simpsons (3.0/8) had 6.1 million laughing.
- The Cleveland Show (2.8/7) entertained 5.6 million.

- Survivor (11.9 million, 3.9/11) saw 2.2 million leave the island.
- Bones* (5.7 million, 1.6/4) gave up 2.4 million.
- The Deep End (4.3 million, 1.1/3) slipped by 1.4 million.
- The Vampire Diaries* (0.7/2) sucked in 1.7 million.

Competition couldn’t be higher in men’s hockey

Now this is a tournament. Last night, the “unstoppable” Canadian men’s hockey team was almost defeated for the second time in two games by the Swiss team. They managed to pull off a shootout victory in a game that was supposed to be won by the end of the first period. This is the same story we’ve seen throughout the first few games of this Olympic tournament, and it couldn’t be more exciting to watch.

Wednesday Ratings: Idol’s Win Streak Ends

As Avatar recently proved—some records are made to be broken. Last night, American Idol tasted something it hadn’t sampled in some time: defeat. For the first time in six years, the reality show was beaten its own time slot.

- Vancouver Olympics coverage (8.9/23 in 18-49) had 29.3 million Americans cheering through the night.
- Human Target (7.1 million, 2.1/6) gave up 1.8 million.
- Modern Family* (5.1 million, 1.7/5) and The Middle* (4.7 million, 1.7/5) tied in the demos.
- The New Adventures of Old Christine* (1.3/4) raked in 4.9 million.

Is women’s hockey too two-sided?

With the Olympics in full swing, the world has now got a taste of what the countries in the women’s ice hockey tournament are all about. Nothing too unexpected has happened so far. For the US team it’s business as usual, while the Canadian women have laid a beating on their competition so far. In their first game last Saturday, Canada broke their own Olympic record for goals by crushing Slovakia 18-0. It was a game that prompted many questions among the hockey world.
