Stella McCartney Inspired by Union Jack

Stella McCartney changed the colors of the Union Jack for Team Great Britain's Olympics kit to ensure the athletes feel "identifiable."
The fashion designer wanted to respect the symbol's "beauty" while using it as the main focus on the Adidas sportswear for the London 2012 Olympics, but she amended the color scheme to avoid making the sign feel "overused" in the lead up to the spectacle: "I was also aware of the fact that it's something that might be overused in the build-up to the Olympics, in taxis, on cushions and mugs, so I wanted to do something different with it - but that was still respectful of its beauty. Actually, the colors of the Union Jack are similar to a lot of other flags and the athletes really wanted to feel identifiable as Team GB, so I just used different colors to say the same thing."

Stella McCartney Launches Menswear Range

Stella McCartney has launched her first men’s lifestyle collection.
The British designer, who is the visionary behind the Great Britain kit for the 2012 Olympic Games, is celebrating her new role by unveiling three sports-inspired collections, which cater for both men and women.
“This is the first lifestyle-inspired collection and apart from bespoke tailoring, it’s the first time I’ve ever done anything for men. It’s interesting to be able to work on both men’s and women’s looks in a more casual sporting arena, and to have a kind of easiness to them that appeals to people but still has a sort of edge, an element of the language of the Olympic games and Team GB.”
The new menswear collection will celebrate the Best of British and is to feature T-shirts, track pants and hooded sweatshirts in the designer’s signature clean-cut style. Meanwhile, the women’s line will “focus on the art of layering,” with tank tops and capes among the pieces on offer.
Hossa finally finds the holy grail

The third time was a charm for Marion Hossa, who, after three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, finally got to hoist the shining silver mug. Hossa’s Penguins fell four games to two in the 2008 Finals. In the offseason, Hossa jumped ship to champion Detroit and hoped for a repeat, but his new Red Wing brethren came up one game (and one goal) short of this feat. They lost, of course, to Hossa former allies from Pittsburgh.

NBC Down about $250 Million on Olympics Tally

Ratings went up for the 2010 Winter Olympics (which were last broadcast in 2006), but NBC is still down about $250 million.
According to recent estimates, NBC parent General Electric raked in a cool $800 million on the televised event, but after NBC shelled out $820 mill for rights alone, the network is in the red.
Maybe they should have tried to get the Super Bowl away from FOX instead.

Miller the key to Buffalo’s future

A goalie can definitely steal a series, but can a goalie steal a Stanley Cup? That’s the question being asked about Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. Facing the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2010 NHL Playoffs, Buffalo will be putting a lot of weight on their Olympic goaltender in their first playoff appearance in three years. But Miller isn’t looking at the past. His full attention is on the series against Boston, and he looked pretty good in his first game.

Bringing the boys back home

It’s been a long-time coming. 42 days, 14 games in 13 cities, and 13,000 miles later, the longest road trip in NHL history is officially over. The Canucks are heading back to Vancouver for their first home game since Jan. 27 at the formerly-named Canada Hockey Place. The Canucks went 8-5-1 during the trip which, all things considered, is just about what could be hoped for from the road-weary skaters. After Wednesday’s shootout loss to Phoenix, the only thing any Canuck could possibly want is a night in his own bed.

The Olympic Hangover

The Olympic Hangover is running strong in the world of hockey. It seems like no amount of coffee is waking us up to the fact that the NHL is back on and the players are earning their paychecks once again. The fighting has returned. The real fourth lines have returned. GM Place is GM Place again. But after such a successful and thoroughly entertaining tournament, how many people are truly excited about regular-season hockey; and how many are just waiting for the second round of the playoffs to begin?

Should the NHL adopt the Olympic style?

With one game left in the Olympic hockey tournament, it’s probably safe to say that we as fans are hungry for more of the Olympic style. The tournament in Vancouver over the past two weeks has shown us competitive game after competitive game, regardless of who the puck was dropping between, with fewer duds than anybody could have expected. We’ve seen upsets, comebacks, overtimes, and everything in between, and all of it without many of the things that plague the everyday NHL.

Thursday Ratings: Olympics Coverage Skates to Victory

American Idol‘s first results show of the season wasn’t strong enough to compete with the action in Vancouver. Coverage of the women’s figure skating finals helped NBC defeat FOX in the viewers and demos once again.

- The Olympic Games (22.5 million, 5.8/16 in 18-49) fell 2.8 million from last Thursday.
- Approximately 17.8 million watched the first four eliminations on American Idol (6.4/17).
- Survivor (11.5 million, 3.7/10) only lost 400,000.
- The Deep End (1.1/3) ended its run with 3.9 million.
- The Vampire Diaries* (1.7 milion, 0.7/2) remained steady.
