EA Confirms Spore For DS

EA confirmed their continuing commitment to both of Nintendo’s gaming platforms today. Next Generation reports that during EA’s conference call to investors, the company asserted that they are actively directing resources to publishing games on the Wii and the DS, including one of 2007’s most anticipated titles, Wil Wright’s Spore. The company did not suggest a release window for the game. Some of Maxis’ other “god-game” franchises were mentioned, including My Sims and SimCity. Assuming that Spore can live up to the hype, a version of the game on the DS would be yet another way for the handheld to expand its audience.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fate Trailer Online

Square Enix has continued to offer the trailers from the recent Jump Festa online, this time with a video sampling of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fate for the DS. The trailer largely focuses on in-game play mechanics versus the larger balance of pre-rendered video for Revenant Wings. The images of the new game look well-detailed for a Nintendo DS game, and the trailer shows off multiple characters. The game will support local ad hoc wireless support, but does not feature full Nintendo Wi-Fi connectivity.

Japanese React To Dragon Quest XI Announcement

The announcement that the latest entry in the Dragon Quest series would not take place on a traditional console but instead the Nintendo DS shook up Japanese fans. Famitsu magazine has polled both magazine readers and retailers to get their opinions of the shift, and Insert Credit has a detailed summary of the overall reaction. In the Famitsu poll, 40.3% of readers asked were excited by the idea of having Dragon Quest XI on the handheld, but 46% had a negative opinion. Even more reacted negatively to the action-based battle changes in the RPG. Retailers were more on the positive side; this might be a reflection of the mainstream opinion, and not the hard core. Insert Credit also details the specific comments from magazine readers, and the span of opinions is interesting. Despite the negative reaction from fans, though, Dragon Quest XI is still likely to be a huge seller in Japan.

2006 Holiday Gift Guide: Nintendo DS Lite

The Nintendo DS Lite is all about improving the whole Nintendo DS experience. The original was a bit clunky (although some preferred it’s size) and had a fairly dim screen. Not so with the DS Lite. The new model looks great, featuring the same touchscreen gameplay with 33% less bulk. While you get the same in-game functionality as the original DS, we still think it’s worth the upgrade. Forget the fact that the graphics aren’t on par with the PSP - the Nintendo DS blows it away in terms of the selection of games available in it’s vast library. Add in online gaming through the Nintendo WiFi connection, and this one is a winner.

So, we were able to pick up an InvisibleSHIELD for the Nintendo DS Lite, and figured we would go for a review here on The Bleeding Edge. We have used InvisibleSHIELD products in the past, and were somewhat impressed by their quality (see our iPod InvisibleSHIELD review.) DS-Xtreme Nintendo DS Flash Cart Reviewed

Maxconsole.net has taken an in-depth look at the DS-Xtreme flash cartridge for the Nintendo DS. The cartridge manufacturer claims that this is the first all-in-one solution for the Nintendo DS for homebrew development, movie and music playback, and game backups in a package that fits within the DS cartridge slot. Other implementations have either required users to have some kind of PassMe device, or would use a combination of the DS and the GBA slots on the DS to function. Many devices have required game patching to allow cartridge backups to run. The DS-Xtreme offers plug-and-play functionality with 4 gigabits of RAM (512 megabytes) in a small form-factor. Maxconsole’s review finds that the DS-X claims are generally true, and only really dings this solution for the inability to expand the internal memory, the slightly high price and the lack of a manual. Overall, this offering appears to be a homebrew developer’s dream come true.

Glitches Slip Into Pokemon Diamond, Pearl

Nintendo of Japan has announced that Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl for the Nintendo DS have a “rare” bug that causes the came to malfunction in certain situations and possibly cause the loss of save date, according to GameSpot. A couple of workarounds have been posted to the official Japanese Pokemon website, and apparently, patches will be issued through Nintendo DS Download stations in Japan.
This glitch should be fixed by the time the game hits American shores, but this is the latest in a series of issues that have been found in Nintendo DS games. First, Amaze Entertainment, developers for Lego Star Wars 2 for the Nintendo DS admitted that the first batch of the game released had significant bugs, and later batches have slipstreamed in fixes. Then, it was revealed that Bubble Bobble Revolution had a huge bug that prevented users from finishing the game. Luckily, a series of horrible reviews for the game probably prevented many gamers from purchasing that title. Now, one of Nintendo’s highest profile titles has issues. It is hard to draw conclusions based on issues found in three separate development teams and publishers, but there does seem to be an overall rise in issues making their way to consumers across all platforms.

Another Special Edition DS Lite

Japan gets another limited edition Nintendo DS in November, this time the bundle is a special edition pink DS tied with the release of Love and Berry for the console. The limited edition console will hit stores on November 22, and will likely sell out that day. The bundle will sell for 23,730 Yen ($200 US). The arcade game Oshare Majo: Love and Berry and its related collectible cards have been popular in Japan, but the games have not really penetrated the US market. Still, this is one more limited edition Nintendo DS that will drive more sales in Japan, while the US hasn’t yet seen anything beyond the new DS colors.
