Therma Blades Warm Up

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science,

Therma BladesSome NHL players will become guinea pigs in November to test Therma Blade’s new heated skate blades. Inventor Tory Weber claims that the prototypes cut down on friction up to 50% and allow players to skate faster with less energy needed. There is a resistor in the blade that heats it by battery to 5º C (~41º F,) regulated by a microprocessor in the heel. Apparently the warmth thickens the film of water between the ice and the blade and acts as a lubricant. We don’t know much about the way skates work. We thought that perhaps there would be less chaos at the hockey rink if the players’ feet were warmer.

EA Shutting Down Servers For Madden 06, NBA Live 06, And More

Pulling the plug EA online game servers

People always ask, “Why buy the newest Madden game? They’re all the same.” Well, here’s one very cut-and-dry reason you can use to explain: because, eventually, these game’s servers get taken down. EA is planning to take down 42 games’ servers on September 1 (although many of these are the same game across multiple platforms), and an additional seven on November 1. This isn’t a new trend, as there’s a sizable list of servers for EA games that have gone offline over time.

Apparently there really is a reason to pick up that newest Madden.

Atlanta Thrashers Set To Make NHL Playoffs Debut

Posted by Milo Taibi Categories: Championship, NHL, Playoffs,

Description
For the first time in the Atlanta Thrashers’ seven-year history, they have made the NHL playoffs and will play the New York Rangers in round one. Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley thinks that the playoffs birth for the Thrashers will bring an air of excitement to Atlanta.

“I think we’re going to generate lots of energy in this great city with the playoffs, there are lots of faithful hockey fans who have waited a long time for this, and now we’re going to be able to thank them by giving them the NHL playoffs. That will create an extra buzz for this city and hopefully create new hockey fans.”

Dropping Dimes Draft Blog: Round 6, Pick 6

Charlie Villanueva

Before we turn our full attention on this pick in the draft, let me first say that it is nice to have the NHL season get underway. Although hockey has lost its place among “the big four” sports in North America, if you have not tried it out, my strong suggestion is for you to withold final judgment until you see a game live. The speed simply does not translate to the small screen.

How is this related to hoops? Well, you might find yourself in a league with Canadians who might not be studying up as hard as they should on hoops because the buzz of a new hockey season is too hard to ignore. And unnecessary aggravation from a hockey league is just as problematic for fantasy players as it can be sometimes for a basketball league. Take this league I am in, partnered with a friend. The commish cannot even input the draft results, set waiver priority in the proper order plus the league has not even been activated even though the NHL started play last week! What a bunch of amateurs. So to all the Dime readers out there, do yourself a favour and make sure your basketball league has a good commish at the helm. That way, you do not have to worry about the league settings going out of whack, and can settle down to the business of picking a winning squad.

Round 6, Pick 6: Charlie Villanueva, SF/PF, Milwaukee Bucks.
