Roberto Luongo

The Vancouver Canucks are facing the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL playoffs for the third straight season. For the last two, they’ve lost both times in six games, and the blame has largely been placed on Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo for collapsing in the high pressure situation. It’s something that he’s being dealing with for his entire career. On Wednesday night, the two teams started another series while many wondered how Luongo would hold up, and he answered the call by shutting out Chicago 2-0.

Rumors sending Phoenix Coyotes back to Winnipeg?

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Rumors,

Shane DoanBoth co-hosts on Hockey Central at Noon, a Toronto-based radio program, have claimed that numerous sources confirmed with them that the NHL would announce a move for the Phoenix Coyotes organization back to Winnipeg. Former NHL tough guy Nick Kypreos and former NHL general manager Doug MacLean both have very credible names among sports media and the fact that both have independently heard the same rumors lends a lot of weight to the claims.

Toronto Maple Leafs’ quest for a number one goalie

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

James ReimerNow that the Toronto Maple Leafs mercifully have been officially taken themselves out of playoff contention, the members of Leafs Nation have begun asking who they will turn to in goal for the 2011-12 season. After beginning the season with veteran J.S. Giguere and supposed-goalie-of-the-future Jonas Gustavsson, the Leafs found themselves playing behind most teams thanks to miserable netminding. With continued injuries to Giguere’s groin and Gustavsson’s heart, the Leafs looked way down the depth chart and brought up James Reimer.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL, Playoffs,

Ryan CallahanEverybody knows that Zdeno Chara has the hardest shot in the NHL, but nobody knows that more right now that Ryan Callahan of the New York Rangers. After blocking a Chara blast in Monday’s 5-3 comeback win against the Boston Bruins, Callahan left the game and it was later confirmed that he fractured his ankle on the play and is out indefinitely. Chances are Callahan won’t be back, regardless how long the Rangers playoff run extends.

Tampa Bay Lightning find ways to win in close games

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: NHL, Playoffs,

Steven StamkosIf the NHL playoffs began today, the Tampa Bay Lightning would enter as the fifth-seeded team in the east, taking on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Only two Eastern Conference playoff teams have scored more goals this season than the Lightning, but none have given up nearly as many as they have. In fact, with 216 goals for and 222 against, the Lightning are the only of the top eight teams in the east to give up more goals than they’ve scored.

Matt Cooke suspended 10 games plus playoffs

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, NHL, Playoffs,

Matt CookeMatt Cooke is relentless. He seems to have a vampiric lust for brains and will stop at nothing to see them oozing out of his opponent’s ears after delivering a vicious head shot. His latest infraction came on Sunday when he laid out New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh with his elbow, effectively challenging NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell to either start a new chapter in punishment for the kind of hits nobody wants to see, or let history repeat itself by doling out a meaningless penalty.

Ilya Kovalchuk taking New Jersey Devils up the standings

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Ilya Kovalchuk In their last 25 games, the New Jersey Devils have recorded 42 out of a possible 50 points. This is the same team that only managed 22 points in their first 41 games. If the Ilya Kovalchuk nine-figure contract situation from last summer was the definition of “ridiculous,” this current run by the Devils to make an impact in the Eastern Conference must be the meaning of “absurd.”

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Editorial, NHL,

2011 NHL Heritage ClassicSo the Calgary Flames continued their hot streak in the freezing cold, beating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0 in the 2011 Heritage Classic, held at McMahon Stadium in Calgary. Throughout the game, the announcers could only talk about the dropping temperature, how bad the ice was and what the players had to do to adjust to the outdoor conditions. Despite the success of the Winter Classic in recent years, aren’t these games getting a little out of hand?

Mario Lemiuex speaks out about ‘travesty’ in NHL

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Mario LemieuxOn Sunday, Mario Lemieux added his voice to the growing number of those who are seemingly upset with the current regime controlling the NHL. Whether you think it’s a problem that Lemieux is only publically coming out now that it’s his Penguins under attack or whether you think he’s a hypocrite in decrying the amount of NHL goonery going on while employing Matt Cooke is irrelevant. When Mario Lemieux speaks, everybody shut up and listen.
