CBS Launches TV.com App

TV.com Screen shot CBS Interactive has launched their TV.com application. With it you get free access to clips from CSI, the L word, Star Trek and more. Shake your iPhone or touch and get a random clip. There is also free streaming from CBS News, Sports and Radio, Showtime and cnet. Although most of the content are clips, promos and interviews, there will undoubtedly be more full episodes if the app is well received.

You can download the TV.com app now.

Millions Watch Inauguration Online

We heard that over 5 billion global viewers watched the Presidential inauguration yesterday, but if you were one of those that kept track and participated in CNN and Facebook’s streaming partnership, you weren’t the only one. According to statistics, the pairing resulted in 600,000 status updates posted with 4,000 updates per minute. With millions logged on during the broadcast, about 8,500 status updates were posted in the first minute of President Obama’s speech. CNN itself got more than 136 million page views.

Prison Break’s Last Days on TV

To be perfectly honest, I never suspected Prison Break would last beyond the first season. Like, who wants to watch some guys endlessly fail to break out of a jail? I always wondered where the show could possibly go, but FOX managed to surprise even me. Prison Break won awards, generated tons of buzz and enjoyed a four season run. But now, it’s all over.

“Prison Break had a hell of a run, but the run has ended,” stated Kevin Reilly, FOX president, at a recent press event. “This will be the last year of the show.”

The official excuse is that the show has naturally “played out,” but the ratings for the drama have been decidedly down this year. So…how much longer will fans have to enjoy the show? “We’ve got our remaining batch of four episodes, and there are a couple more they’re contemplating,” said Reilly. Could these “couple more” episodes be the series finale or a movie-type ending?

Reilly says that a “really cool ending” is planned, and that “it’s a hell of an idea.”

Samsung HDTV With Internet@TV

Samsung has announced that many of its HDTVs released this year will feature Internet@TV service. The 5th generation Yahoo Widget Engine allows users to check news headlines, stocks, and search Internet based photos and videos on such sites as Flickr, and Yahoo News and Finance. Social interaction will also be available as well as access to YouTube, eBay and other sites. Connection is by Ethernet or optional wireless USB dongle.

Crispy Gamer Personal Reviews

Only open for a couple of months, Crispy Gamer claims that it has over 35,000 members. It certainly proves that of all the failing industries, this one certainly isn’t. The site gets its content from gaming writers, as opposed to ads and other info from publishers. In addition to extensive reviews, the site features news, forums for gamers and video clips. Head over there and toss in your two cents worth on your favorite game or research one that you would like to try.

Sling.com Becomes Official

Sling.com has officially gone from beta to open to the public, (although they haven’t yet removed the logo.) There is access to hand picked TV, movies and web video. Over 650 shows on 110 channels are available in the genres of sci-fi, classic, reality, politics and lots more. And if you have a Slingbox you can connect it to your TV. Sling is free, but if you register you can subscribe to your fave shows and communicate with family and friends on the site.

Barack Obama Official Web Site Change.gov

Change.gov logo Moving right along, Pres-elect Barack Obama already has his own new official site. Change.gov features a countdown to the inauguration, updates on what he is doing and asks for input on personal stories concerning the election and the road you took to get there. There is also information concerning his future policy, agenda and a page to apply for a gig in the new administration. Sadly, there is no news yet about the puppy, which Obama claims is the topic of about 50% of the emails he receives.

Oh, and for an added tidbit, Obama’s site runs on ExpressionEngine - the same publishing tool we use here to run Gear Live. We recommend it to anyone.

CBS Employs Touchscreen for Electoral States

We admit that we have been watching CBS news to catch the latest on Sarah Palin, and found that we were really impressed by some of the technology used in their Eye to Eye series. Jeff Greenfield was using this incredible touchscreen that could instantly change a red state to blue (or vice versa) while altering the count at the same time. Here’s hoping that the upcoming Presidential election will have lots of bells and whistles (without so many promos attached.)

Making Reality, TV Guide Style

Making News Savannah Style cast It was absolutely by accident that I began watching episodes of Making News: Savannah Style on TV Guide, but I was instantly drawn in by the dynamic personalities and behind-the-scenes action. I actually don’t watch any news program…but I’m not above watching a reality show about one.

Savannah’s WJCL news team has the lowest ratings in their market. The station has been plagued by staffing troubles (the general manager of the station was arrested for embezzlement, among other troubles) and the owners are trying to sell, leaving little money for upgrades and equipment. To that end, the cameras and sound work only some of the time, leaving the news team scrambling to meet deadlines and create TV-worthy coverage.
