New York Nearest Subway augmented reality iPhone 3GS app

For all of you who thought that the compass inside the was just a waste, think again. We’ve seen some apps that will be making use of the compass in ways you never thought possible, and one such app is New York Nearest Subway. Developed by acrossair, New York Nearest Subway is best explained as an augmented reality app that overlays information on top of a real-world view. You pull up the app, and the camera view is shown, with information telling you about which direction to walk to get to the nearest train station. It is truly genius. Hit the video above to see it in action. It’s not available just yet, but once it is, we will let you know.

You use this app alongside Exit Strategy NYC, and you are golden.


Gov. Paterson Proposes iPod Tax

iTunes logoNew York’s Governor David Paterson is trying to come up with creative ways to pad the state’s $15.4 billion deficit. One of these is an “iPod tax” that would charge for downloaded music and other “digitally delivered entertainment services.” In addition, cable and satellite TV services, movie tickets, taxis, soda, beer, wine, cigars and massages will also be taxed. The proposal must still get legislative approval and we expect that if it passes, there may be an influx of New Yorkers flooding to places like New Jersey to get their tunes.

NYTE Shows Patterns of Communication Through Art

Globe EncountersOnce again, science has crossed over into the area of art. MIT has teamed with AT&T to create New York Talk Exchange, which debuted this week at the Museum of Modern Art. The NYTE measures the volume of IP and telephony that goes in and out of the city anonymously. It then is portrayed visually at the museum as well as on the Internet. Globe Encounters displays NY’s connections to other cities globally. Pulse of the Planet shows how they alter during a 24 hour period with time zone changes. The third exhibit studies the five boroughs and how they vary.
Studying the data shows that New York tends to “reach out and touch” Asia and South America, whereas London concentrates on New York and Europe. They are hoping that it will help in studies overall in the area of globalization.The display will be active through May 12.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to rock LEDs

Let it be known that we New Yorkers take our “going green” seriously. The newly arrived Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree—like its holiday arch-rival the New Year’s Eve Ball—is replacing its incandescent bulbs with energy-friendly LED lights, 30,000 of them to be exact.  This means the 84-foot tall Norway Spruce’s electricity consumption will be reduced from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day (the savings equals the monthly consumption of a 2000-square-foot home). Plus, when the tree is taken down in January, it will become lumber for houses built by Habitat for Humanity (take that New Years Ball!).  If you’re in New York this holiday season, pay this tree the props it deserves by visiting between 5:30 am and 11:30 pm.

NYPD’s New Segway to Crime Fighting

NYPD on SegwayThere seems to be two schools of thought regarding the 2-wheeled “personal transporter” known as the —a convenient vehicle for getting around town or a vehicle for the attention-starved. Well, in New York you can now say it’s a vehicle for fighting crime. Twenty-five New York cops have been trained and have started using 10 Segways in parks and beaches including Coney Island, Central Park, Prospect Park and more, with Yankee and Shea Stadiums to come. The Segways won’t be used in the actual streets of NY, as—quite ironically—they fail certain safety standards, and therefore cannot be registered legally in the state. New York joins over 200 police agencies around the country that employ the Segway.

New York Cabbies Get Touchy About Touch-Screens

NYC Cab Touch ScreenLast week, New York’s Taxi and Limousine Commission approved a plan to install touch-screens in all 13,000 city cabs. The monitors not only let riders pay via credit card, but include GPS technology and info about bars and restaurants. However, many drivers oppose the plan, due to the cost of the screens, credit card fees, and time lost if the monitor needs repair. Some cabbies are even concerned about the GPS tracking their routes (the Taxi Commission states that only pickup and drop-off locations will be recorded). The vehicles will be upgraded starting October 1.

Rumor: Nintendo US Division To Move to NY or SF? Me: SF Please!

According to the online version of GameInformer Magazine, Nintendo employees were recently told that the company would be relocating, away from its current Redmond, Washington offices. According to the article:

Employees of Nintendo of America were told on Thursday that they would have to decide by June 1st whether or not they would be willing to relocate or accept a severance package. Our sources indicated these new offices would be opened as early as this Fall.
...
Both San Francisco and New York were pointed at as being the potential targets for new locations.

Personally, I think a move like this would make a lot of sense for the company. Redmond one day looked like it was going to become the next tech hotbed, but it’s so dominated by Microsoft these days that it’s hard to really make a presence in that area. Plus, the number of third-party publishers located in the bay area is staggering (just look on the case of your most recent game for an address, trust me…), so if Nintendo really is serious about courting third parties more actively, this would definitely give them a more hands-on way to do it. A New York office would also make a lot of sense given that, well, it’s New York and they’ve already got their only US store there.

My guess? IF they do move (and that’s a big “if”, they’ve been in Redmond for a long while)... they’re probably going to do both. I could see it easily being advantageous for Nintendo to have both an east coast and west coast operations branch. But if they HAVE to choose, my vote is for the SF Bay area. Having Nintendo so close to home would be sweet indeed.
