VUDU coming to Playstation 3 on November 23

As if having Sony's own Video Marketplace, Netflix, and Hulu to satisfy the film cravings of PS3 owners wasn't enough, Sony is now adding a fourth movie service with VUDU.
Basically, VUDU is a video marketplace that allows rentals and purchases of movies through streaming. This is something that the other services on the system don't do, as it is the only one that allows you to purchase movies without downloading them, but it's not a big leap either.
Rentals will cost about $2 for SD, while HD is a higher $4-6--those $6 rentals get you the HDX 1080p streaming content, which looks fantastic. Signing up with the VUDU service will earn you a $6 credit as well.
VUDU is only available in the US.

Netflix coming to “select” Android devices next year

Netflix posted an interesting blog entry this weekend on which they went behind the scenes as to why there isn't an Android Netflix app just yet. Apparently, it has to do with the fact that Android devices are fragmented, and there isn't a single DRM system across the board, unlike the iPhone and Windows Phone 7 (which both have a Netflix app.) This means that, according to the blog, it's much harder to ensure security of the video content provided by Netflix, which is something that's required by publishers. Still, they are working on it, and now say that they will be able to release an Android app for "select" devices early next year. While there is no mention of which ones, more updates are said to be upcoming.

Netflix on Wii no longer requires a disc

While it's not the awesome upgrade that PS3 Netflix received, Wii owners can now stream movies directly to the console without having to get our of their chairs and find that red disc. Just head into the Wii Shop channel and download the free Netflix channel, put in your account credentials, and you'll be ready to roll. It still isn't HD by any means, but hey, it's discless.
Netflix goes discless, 1080p, Dobly Digital Plus 5.1 for PS3

All you PS3 owners out there who are tired of having to manually insert that Netflix disc whenever you wanna get your streaming on, listen up! Netflix has just announced that, starting October 18th, the PS3 disc will no longer be required. Even better news? PS3 owners will be able to stream some content in 1080i 1080p resolution, and 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Plus surround sound. The PS3 is the first to get these oft-requested features, and even more curious is the fact that they seem to be left out of the Xbox 360's upcoming dashboard update that is set to drop in November.
So, yeah Netflix, it's definitely cool and all that you are finally bringing out the big guns with your instant streaming service, and we'll definitely be defaulting to the PS3 for our viewing starting on the 18th--but can we get a little device parity here?

Google’s Taking Over TV, Too

It’s official: Google is in charge of the modern world. The Internet giant recently signed a deal which brings together HBO, Netflix, Pandora and the NBA under a new banner: Google TV.
It’s all part of Google’s multimillion-channel TV system, which will launch in the fall. The system runs on Google’s Android OS, making it possible for Web viewers to watch content on their television sets. And next fall, Google’s going to present Google Mind, which allows users to plug their brains directly into their computer systems. (We’re just kidding about that last bit … or, are we?)
NBC Universal, Time Warner and Twitter will also be involved, offering apps which will allow users to access content from their TVs. HBO alone plans to offer 600-plus hours of programming (which just about covers the first two seasons of The Sopranos), and the NBA has created an app which will keep viewers updated on games and scores in real time. Google is hinting that even more news will unfold in the next few weeks.

Bleeding Edge TV 366: Xbox 360 Fall 2010 dashboard update review

The next major Xbox 360 dashboard update happens in November, and we’ve got a look at all the new changes and additions in this episode of Bleeding Edge TV. This is a big update that brings another big redesign to the Xbox 360, similar to what they did a couple years ago with the New Xbox Experience. Things are a lot more flat and boxy, like what you’d find on Windows Phone 7, and the synergy is understandable…plus, it makes things a lot more user-friendly as it pertains to Kinect.
What else do you get? Netflix search and DVD queue management, along with a Netflix app redesign. ESPN brings 3,500 live sporting events per year (close to 100 per day!,) Zune finally brings music to the Xbox 360 with Zune Pass integration, and more. Blockbuster files for bankruptcy

What’s the easiest way for a behemoth of a company, like Blockbuster, that seemingly owns its market segment to die? Being unwilling to change with the times. Note, I said unwilling, not unable. With the amount of money that Blockbuster was bringing in during the VHS-to-DVD transition, you’d think that they’d have better planned for the future—especially when Netflix arrived on the scene 13 years ago. Instead, the company was too brash and egotistical to realize that their business model would be in need of a major overhaul, and now they are paying for it. Today Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy. At this point, they don’t plan to shut down any stores or anything…but hey, Hollywood Video went bankrupt this past February, and a few months later, they shuttered operations completely. Just looking at what Blockbuster currently offers by way of online on-demand viewing, we wouldn’t be surprised (although we’d be saddened) if they were gone within 24 months.

Netflix Watch Instantly launches in Canada today

To all our friends north of the border, you’ll be glad to know that your 13-year wait for Netflix to arrive is finally over. Well, sort of. While Canadians still don’t have access to disc rentals, today they pick up the ability to sign up for a Netflix Watch Instantly account, allowing them to stream movies to Netflix-compatible devices.
