LUG To Hold Auction With Nerds

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, PC / Laptop,

LUG

The University of Washington LUG (Linux User Group) was told that they needed more females among their ranks to attract them into the WSU’s computer science programs. The nerds came up with a plan to auction themselves off. They suggested that the delegated male students can fix the females’ computers, help with homework, or act as dinner partners.

LUG President Ben Ford says that he and a selected sorority sister will host the event, which he hopes will become a YouTube extravaganza. Unfortunately, although the club has contacted many of the sororities on campus, there have been no takers thusfar. We suspect that any female who is using Linux is already intelligent enough to fix her own computer and can do her homework by herself, thank you very much.

Gaming at the Maker Faire: Huge NES, Doom3 Mods, and More

Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Culture, Nintendo, PC, Puzzle,

The Maker Faire was held this past weekend at the San Mateo Fairgrounds in sunny California. For those of you who haven’t heard, it’s basically a huge collection of engineering- and creativity-inclined nerds having fun with robots, fire, accelerometers, and anything else they can get their hands on.

Well of course, any time you get that many nerds together in one place, there’s going to be some gaming involved. Here’s a quick summary of the gaming-related wackiness that could be seen at the Maker Faire, with more pictures and videos after the jump. Exhibits included:

  • A huge, working 2-person-sized NES controller
  • The Doom 3 Case Mod From Hell (nyuk nyuk!) with working air-locks and remote control integrated display
  • Push-button LED Tetris
  • A life-sized crocheted Atari 2600, complete with 2 joysticks and TV displaying Adventure **
  • Microsoft reps using Wii remotes to control RC Cars (I kid you not… I asked them if this was a conflict of interests and they laughed) **
  • Build-your own accelerometer-based game interface using gloves, a flyswatter, or a frying pan **

** = Not pictured. The Faire was totally overwhelming, which affected my photo-taking abilities. Sorry!

Oh, and there was a huge Tesla Coil that shot 14.7 million volts. That was OK too I guess 😉

Show your Wii and Beatles fandom with a “Biitles” shirt

Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Culture, Nintendo, Portable/Mobile, Wii,

The Biitles: Let it BiiSometimes an item appears that’s so spectacularly nerdy and off-the-wall that it just HAS to be blogged. This is definitely one of them… if you happen to be a fan of Nintendo and the Beatles, and think it’s a good idea to represent John, Paul, George and Ringo in Mii form, then this is definitely the shirt for you!

If you’re a little more surreptitious about your fandom, you can still enjoy having Mii-ized version of the Beatles on your Wii. Over on the NerdyShirts website, they’ve got their Wii number posted on the description and their “Biitles” are ready to mingle! I might be adding them as friends later this evening… maybe I can even convince them to perform in the background while I’m Wii bowling.

Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) is Back, and Much Much Bigger

Penny Arcade Expo LogoWith E3 cancelled (or at least significantly altered and shrunken), and an uncertain new “E for All” expo taking its first baby steps, THE gaming convention for the hardcore is shaping up to be next year’s Penny Arcade Expo, and the organizers seem to know this…

This year, PAX will move from its humble roots in Bellevue, WA to the larger and significantly more prominent Washington Trade and Convention Center. The event will be held from August 26th-28th and expects to see about 30,000 gamers converging on the Center as one sweaty, black-T-shirted mass.

It should be interesting to see how many developers and publishers decide to exhibit this year, given that this is now THE major venues for gaming companies to meet with their consumers.
