Navy set to run helicopter drones on Linux

Navy unmanned helicopter linux

Everyone knows at least one guy who uses Linux. I don't use it myself, but I knew that one guy. He built all his PCs from spart parts, he knew the ins and outs of programming, he was a little bit of an anarchist (ok, more than a little). He fits the bill of the Linux user stereotype-- the young hobbyist and hacker.

But now Linux has a new user. The United States military. Oddly, if I were to describe the military in a few words, hobbyist and hacker would be the dead last words I picked.

Raytheon makes drone and missile systems for the United States. These systems used to run on the Solaris operating system, but the Navy has asked Raytheon to help make some code switches so that they can use Linux for their upcoming unmanned helicopter project, the Mq-8B Fire Scout.

The move is expected to create more intuitive controls for the new unarmed aerial vehicles and save money in the long run. The military originally held that open source software presented too great a security risk for defense applications. It seems that Linux has changed minds.

How do you feel about the Navy's choice to go open source? Chime in in the comments to let us know.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 drops November 8

Modern Warfare 3, the next video game in the enormously popular Call of Duty franchise, is set for a Nov. 8, 2011 release and Activision on Tuesday teased the eagerly awaited title with an action-packed trailer (video below).

Earlier this month, gaming site Kotaku claimed that a leaked audio clip from Modern Warfare 3 contained a reference to SEAL Team Six, the Navy commandoes who took out Osama bin Laden on May 2.

If that reference exists, it wasn't contained in the official trailer, which managed to whet Call of Duty fans' appetites for what looks to be a blockbuster first-person shooter jam-packed with high-stakes action in "the next global conflict."

"It doesn't take the most powerful nations on Earth to create the next global conflict, just the will of a single man," intones a brief spot of narration in the trailer. That conflagration kicks in the streets of New York, presumably following through on a Russian invasion that was imminent at the end of Modern Warfare 2.

The action then moves to England, France, and Germany. Clips of crashing trains, tank battles, tumbling buildings, air strikes, amphibious assaults, and lots and lots of street fighting are interspersed throughout.

Description is all set to present Pirate Hunters: USN, which comes just on the wake of national news involving Somali pirates. The series showcases the U.S. Navy’s pursuit of pirates and piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

Though the series is in the same locale where piracy made recent headlines, the deal has already been in the works for months. The Navy has allowed cameras aboard the USS San Antonio and the USS Boxer, the latter of which was part of the recent rescue effort.

A Pirate Hunters pilot is in the works, but there’s no word on when it will air.

Pentagon THINKS They Got a Direct Hit

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Misc. Tech, Science,

spy satelliteNow that the Pentagon claims to have hit the evil spy satellite and rendered it harmless by their SM-3 missile, experts there say

believe that they made a direct hit.

“As we continue to do the post-strike analysis, (it) continues to give us confidence that the hydrazine tank was ruptured. However, the analysis is still ongoing,” spokesman Bryan Whitman said.

There are also reports that some debris has already fallen and that none were larger than footballs. Ouch. We suggest you stay indoors or be alert, just in case.
