Can Disney Rock the Ratings Again?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Prime Time, Cable, Gossip,
Lightning doesn’t strike twice…unless you build the right kind of rod. No one anticipated the runaway success of Disney’s High School Musical, and now the powers-that-be are determined not to be caught unawares a second time. Fanfare and fan participation became the bookends of the High School Musical 2 marketing campaign…and even this pales in comparison to the star treatment the network is giving the soon-to-be-released Camp Rock.
The promos have been going strong for weeks, the Web site is filled with glitter and pizazz, and the debut is scheduled for June 20. Are you itching to set your DVR?
With the Jonas Brothers co-starring and a crop of fresh-faced youngsters, Disney is treating Rock like it’s the heir apparent to the Musical throne (the stars of which are moving quickly past the high school stage of their lives). But…is it?

The SATC Rumor That Wasn’t
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: New Line, Romance, Comedy, Box Office, New Releases, Rumors,
The weekend is over, the results are in, and Sex and the City is definitely the hen of the walk. The movie raked in $55.7 million this weekend, driving Indiana Jones down to the number-two box office position. But now that all the surprises have been spilled, one question remains: what’s up with that a-character-is-going-to-die rumor?
SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t already seen the flick, maybe you don’t want to know, but let me assuage at least one Sex fear: there is no death in the movie. As far as we know, even Miranda’s cat Fatty is still alive and well. Steve’s mom is just fine and living in a home, Magda’s still kicking and yes, all four girls remain well within the realm of the living. So…what’s up with that?

Don’t Count Out Recount
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Cable, HBO, Gossip,
From the first trailer, I was intrigued. In the next moment, I was checking the upcoming TV schedule to be 100% sure my DVR would capture the movie at the first possible opportunity. And I’ve got to tell you, I just can’t wait to watch HBO’s Recount.
I had the dubious pleasure of living through the 2000 presidential election - and all the many, many television hours this momentous and highly historical race entailed. Every four years in November, we as a nation go forth to various polling locations to exercise our Constitution-given Democratic freedoms. But on the evening of November 7, 2000 most people went to sleep without knowing just who the hell the President of the United States would be. But eventually, the decision was made…and so was history. The eight years that followed were rife with events which could keep Hollywood script writers busy for the whole of the century. It was a defining moment, it was the catalyst which undoubtedly led to two earth-shattering wars, and it is still something which (at least, for me) remains shrouded in mystery.
No longer will this remain the case…perhaps. The HBO film Recount will take us back to the past, but what sort of picture will this flick paint?

Cell Phone Cams Can Make You a Star

Budding filmmakers, keep on YouTubing. With hits sometimes getting into the millions, you could be discovered any time now. The proof of this pudding comes from the likes of Spike Lee, who is now working with Nokia to direct cell phone footage of the little people. The director stated, “Aspiring filmmakers no longer have to go to film school to make great work. With a simple mobile phone, almost anyone can now become a filmmaker.”
Yeah, we know that this is not your ordinary director with ordinary backing, but with a decent cellie cam and the world as your oyster, go out there and take your best shot.

Director Yells Cut on Sex and the City Rumors
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Paramount, Romance, Comedy, Upcoming Releases,
The Internet has been aflame since the telltale slip was released that a Sex and the City character will be offed in the upcoming motion picture. Many have speculated on just who will find a horrible fate with the franchise, but are any of them right?
Carrie’s black hair, leading trailers and general paranoia have led to one convincing rumor that it will, in fact, be Mr. Big who perishes in the film.
Director Michael Patrick King, who also supplies the commentaries for the DVDs, put an end to those rumors in recent statements to the press. “Kill Mr. Big?” King asked rhetorically. “I would have been chased around the planet by women with torches.” And that’s not even the half of it.
But with that statement, the director closed the door on all the current Sex speculation about actor Chris Noth‘s character. If Mr. Big won’t die…then, who will? “It’s a summer movie,” King told reporters. “Why would I want to kill anyone?” Could it be that the biggest Sex and the City slip of the season wasn’t even reality?
Oliver Stone to Put W in George W. Bush
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Political, Casting, Filmmaking, Rumors, Scripts, Upcoming Releases,
As reported back in January, director Oliver Stone is going to take on the subject that has created strife, laughs, tears and terror - the presidency of a man named George W. Bush.
At that time (January), Stone said he was going to create “a fair, true portrait” of the man we all call Dubya. It’s now April, and the film is making ready for its start date (the 21st). The script has already been given to Bush biographers. Okay, I haven’t read it. However, according to some reports the script is said to depict Bush as “foul-mouthed,” “obsessed,” and shows a complicated relationship between himself and Bush, Sr.

Disney to Get Serious Musical Competition: How Spectacular
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Cable, Gossip,
Disney can’t control the market on teen/tween musical movies for much longer, not if kids-based Nickelodeon has anything to say about it.
Spectacular, a new musical comedy set in high school, will begin shooting on April 21 - move over, High School Musical. Newcomers Tammin Sursok, Nolan Funk, and Simon Curtis will star in the film, along with Zoey 101’s Victoria Justice. The film will focus on the school choir and one preppy, pretty female student in particular. A new rock-n-roller joins the group, however unwittingly, and soon enough musical romance is borne between them. Sounds a little familiar…but I can’t quite recall which musical movie plot this might be similar to. Hmmm.
Nick’s high school musical movie is not the classic, cookie-cutter musical film. The numbers in this flick are performance-based rather than random singing insertions. Think more Dreamgirls and less My Fair Lady. Right now, the Viacom-owned cable network isn’t planning on any sequels - though there are contractual options open for just such an occurrence.

‘Lipstick Jungle’ Premiere
Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Cable, HBO, NBC, Editorial,
Remember those perfume ads back in the 1980’s for Parfums decoeur ‘Designer Imposters’? They went something like “if you like Giorgio you’ll love Primo!, if you like Opium you’ll love Ninja” or the more recent enticement, “If you like Juicy Couture you’ll love Yeah Baby.” It’s human to want a whiff of luxury at a bargain price - too bad the end result usually stinks.
NBC’s Lipstick Jungle reminds me of those ‘Designer Imposters’. The show, starring Brooke Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price, premiered last night.
If you’re confused and could have sworn Lipstick Jungle stars Lucy Liu and two other chicks, you’re only half wrong. That show is on ABC and is called Cashmere Mafia.
Lipstick Jungle has the right pedigree. It’s based on a novel by Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell and its parallels to that hit HBO series are unmistakable until you scratch the surface.
Lipstick’s plot centers around three powerful Manhattan women who tread in dangerous waters of sex, lies and betrayal. At least, I think that’s what the plot is supposed to be. What I saw seemed more like a Lifetime movie for women than a glossy Primetime sex drama.
