Turn Your Cell Phone into a Translator

NEC TranslatorNEC recently brought their software that translates cell phone speaking from Japanese to English out to play. Although it has been in existence since the 80’s, apparently this is the first time they felt comfortable enough to display it in public. The 50,000 word dictionary was put into a DoCoMo phone. We understand that some of the bugs still have yet to be worked out since it still will not turn English into Japanese, but perhaps they will have that down over the next twenty years.

Nokia Releases N82

Nokia N-82

The latest in the long line of Nokia products to come out is their 5 megapixel N82. With Carl Zeiss optics and Xenon Flash for low light, it’s all about the camera. The phone/cam also features high-quality video recording, an orientation sensor, and can send pictures instantly. A successor to its N95, it comes with a 2 GB microSD memory card for 900 images or 84 minutes of video. The N82 also has WiFi capability and comes equipped with Nokia Maps. Count on a price of €450 (~$658.00.)

T-Mobile ShadowThe T-Mobile Shadow launched this week, the first in a series of mobile devices that are meant to be simplified for those who are telephonically challenged. Designed by HTC, the phone has the usual calling, image sharing, and text messaging capabilities. In addition, it features the simplicity of Windows Mobile and an updated interface.  Available in copper or sage, find it online or at retail stores for $199.99 with a voice-plan or $149.99 with $20.00 per month and a 2 year contract.

MBW Watch Gets Upgrade

SE MBW150Sony Ericsson has released the MBW150 Bluetooth 2.0 Watch. One generation removed from it’s 100 model, it is made of stainless steel and crystal and comes in Classic, Executive, and Sporty designs. Designed to go with their Walkman phone, the timepiece features a remote control for the music player and shows what track is playing on the watch face. The device vibrates when you receive a call, can trace IDs, and has mute and reject buttons. We suspect that in the near future, this watch will become the phone. Sidekick LX to Be Released

October 24 has been chosen as the debut date of the new T-Moblie Sidekick LX. The new cell phone is thinner and has a larger HD LCD swivel screen than its predecessors. Available in midnight blue or espresso brown, it features picture messaging, IM, a cam, web browsing and e-mail capabilities, and a custom designed MySpace Mobile application can be downloaded. NTT Docomo has created a cell phone with a new twist. The Mitsubishi Wellness Navigator has all the usual features but also includes a heart rate monitor, breath analyzer, burned calorie counter, and body fat calculator, and pedometer application. The data is matched to your age, gender, weight, and height, and can be sent along to your doctor to save you the dreaded “regularly scheduled” appointment. No price or availability yet on this prototype, but we are not sure we really want to know how much body fat is in there.

Infobar 2 Makes Japanese Debut

The Japanese company KDDI, in cooperation with Sanyo, has unveiled its Infobar 2 cell phone, the newest generation of the original created in 2003. The device features a 2.6-inch OLED, supports 1-Seg for mobile and reserved TV on its tuner, a 2M cam and a micro SD expansion slot. At a size of 47 × 138 x 15.5 mm and a weight of 104g, the battery allows about 290 minutes of talk time or 350 standby. Check with Sanyo for price and availability on this side of the planet.

This cell phone by M8cool was created for those who love to disco, want to stand out in a crowd, or have stock in Duracell. The entire front panel is covered with flashing lights as is the keypad and the camera in the back. We wonder if that affects the outcome of the image. For that matter, will it bop in time to its ringtones? Nonetheless, it makes you want to sing one more chorus of “Stayin’ Alive,” doesn’t it?
