Now You Can Call a #TAXI

#TAXI The Canadian company CellWand Communications has teamed with Single Touch Systems to allow AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, and Alltel Wireless customers a new service. It is almost too simple. Need a cab? Press #TAXI on your cell phone. Already successful in Canada, ST’s CEO Anthony Macaluso calls it “like 911 for a taxicab.” The new service is pay per use with Alltel and Verizon subscribers coughing up $1.50 per call, while AT&T users will pay $1.79. Other carriers may be added later this year.

Thank goodness companies are finally starting to make cell phones that are not only functional, but look modern, too. HTC’s Touch 3G comes with TouchFLO 3D GUI. The 3G has a 2.8-inch QVGA touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, a 3.2M camera, and supports Bluetooth and Windows 6.1OS. At a size of 102 x 53.6 x 14.5mm and a weight of 96g, it should be available next month in your choice of 4 colors.

Let’s all raise our hands if we want Willcom’s Kuma Bear Phone. Who wouldn’t want to look ludicrous holding a teddy up to his/her ear and speaking into its tummy? Apparently it was a smash at the recent 2008 Good Design Expo in Tokyo. It holds up to four speed dial numbers for Tom and Katie and will come out of its furry holder when Suri get older. After all, at a price of $500.00, who else could afford it?

Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte Cell Phone

Carbon Arte Phone Nokia has a new high end cell phone constructed of carbon fiber, titanium, polished glass, and stainless steel with an anti-fingerprint coating. The 8800 Carbon Arte features a tap-for-time button below the display for an insta-clock. It has turn-to-mute capability by turning the phone screen side down and changing background images. Also included is a 3G memory, a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus cam, high quality audio, and an OLED display. Look for the Arte in the 3rd quarter of this year for €1,100 ($1,620.).

Telus KEYBO Canada’s Telus has released the LG KEYBO that comes with a QWERTY for rapid text messages, a 2.0 megapixel cam for images and video, the company’s mobile music with a 1 GB storage card (expandable to 8GB,) and stereo speakers. Obviously trying to appeal to younger consumers, the KEYBO gives email access and will set you back $299.99 with no contract, $249.99 with a 1 year, $99.99 for two, and go for the 3 year and it will only cost you $49.99. As even a bigger incentive, go for the Student 35 plan online before Sept. 30 and receive a $50.00 GAP gift card.

Spice Mobile X-1 Gaming Phone

India’s Spice Mobile has unveiled its X-1 Phone for game freaks. With a 2.4-inch display, it features a gaming controller peripheral, a 2 megapixel cam, Yamaha 3D surround sound, a call blacklist, and an integrated FM tuner. In addition, it has a memory slot for cards up to 2GB, Bluetooth connectivity, and comes with pre-loaded games and dedicated keys. The Spice X-1 retails for about $210.00.

FL Cell Phone MobiFrance has devised a concept phone in honor of the French Independence Day. Designed to resemble their famous landmark, the FL (French Luxury) curved phone has a touch screen, a 7.2 megapixel cam, and speakers on its sides. The Eiffel Tower mobile device features vibration mode and can be used for all multi-media functions. No date or price yet available, but we suspect this phone will be popular with those who love the country as much as its inhabitants.

LG Chocolate 3 Cell Phone

Yes, Virginia, there are other phones out there. Verizon has launched their LG Chocolate 3 Clamshell. The cellie features a built-in FM transmitter, and supports both Verizon’s EV-DO network for Net surfing and VZ Navigator for GPS service. It also supports Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and a micro SD slot, a 2-megapixel cam and holds 1GB of memory. Available in both black and blue, the 3.9 x 1.9 x 0.6-inch phone is going for $129.99 after mail-in rebate and with a 2-year contract.
