USPS to cease Saturday mail delivery on August 1
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Corporate News, Household

Saturday mail delivery through the United Stated Postal Service will be a thing of the past beginning August 1, 2013. It's a move focused on cutting costs as the USPS tries to deal with, and recover from, massive financial losses due to mandatory retiree health care benefits, and should end up saving the struggling agency about $2 billion per year. Not all Saturday mail activity will go away--packages will still be delivered, P.O. boxes will receive mail as usual, and post offices will still be open on Saturdays. Of course, with the proliferation of email, snail mail demand has decreased significantly over the years. We're sure that this is unwelcome news for Netflix DVD subscribers, but on the bright side, with Saturday mail delivery ceasing, it's another junk mail-free day to look forward to on the weekend.

Google just bought Sparrow and killed it
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Corporate News, Google, Software
The ultra-popular Sparrow mail client is now dead. This morning, Google announced that it had acquired the company and team behind what many called the best Mac and iOS Gmail client. It's great for Google, and well-deserved for the Sparrow team, but as a user, it's disappointing. The company was set to release Sparrow for iPad very shortly, but today Google confirmed that there will be no new updates to the Sparrow apps, nor will it be released for any new platforms. We assume that this means the iPad client is now off the table.
We suspect that the crew behind Sparrow will be rolled into the Gmail team, and we'd even bet that we will see the official Gmail apps for Android and iOS become rebranded and fully-integrated versions of what Sparrow was. If you missed out on Sparrow, you can still get it on the App Store for the time being.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech
Take a look at Zumbox, a startup that is a nationwide paperless postal service. They have one virtual mailbox for every street address which they estimate at 150MM+. To use the service, after signup you type in your street address and view your mail as an envelope. Use it to send mail to any other address, including your bills, statements and personal mail. It costs nothing to receive mail and you can send free a “small amount.” Businesses will pay an introductory price of $.02 per address for large mailings.

Netflix Gets Hassled by USPS
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, Home Entertainment, Movies
Apparently, the office of the USPS Inspector General is not happy because the mailers that Netxflix uses have to be sorted by hand. They estimate that it is costing them about $21 million a year and have suggested that the company include a 17 cent surcharge from now on. Tony Wible, a Citigroup analyst who wrote the report, says that the income that Netflix receives per subscriber would fall from $1.05 to 35 cents. We know that Netxflix, which mails out about 1.6 million movies a day, is clever enough to create a redesigned mailer sometime soon.

How To: Change iPhone Email Signature
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Software

We’ve been using our iPhone for answering many an email while on the go, and one question we hear from other iPhone owners deals with how we changed the “Sent from my iPhone” text from the email signature. We figured a quick how to was in order. It’s quite simple, really, but if you tend to stay away from the Settings menu, then you would never see it. From the iPhone home screen, hit Settings, and then scroll down and tap Mail. You will see a Signature area that you can tap. Once you do this, you are editing your iPhone signature. You can get rid of the default altogether and roll with no signature at all if you like, or you can edit it to your specific preference.
Whatever you end up putting there will be used in both new emails as well as any responses you send. Let us know what you end up putting in your iPhone signature in the comments.
