Apple kills Xserve, introduces new Mac Pro server

Apple today announced that they were ending production of their Xserve line of servers, noting that the Mac mini servers are their most popular server platform by far. However, realizing that some may need more power than the mini offers, they've also introduced a server version of the Mac Pro. For those wanting a Mac Pro server, you can get one starting at $2,999 with a Quad-Core CPU, two 1TB hard drives, 8GB of memory and an ATI video card. Many upgrades are available including a faster processor, more memory, RAID card and more.

The folks over at OWC just got one of the new 2.66GHz 12-core Mac Pro units in their office, and they slapped together and quick and dirty unboxing gallery showing off the goods. Of course, with Apple sticking by their longstanding top-of-the-line desktop design, nothing on the outside really looks all the much different. Still, though, it’s a sign that these beasts are finally shipping, and that’s gotta count for something.

Apple readying six-core Mac Pro Core i7-980x for next week?

The boys over at ZDNet are reporting that they’ve been hearing whispers that Apple is set to debut an overhaul to the Mac Pro professional desktop line, packing in a six-core Intel Core i7-980x processor, as soon as this coming Tuesday, March 16th. They’re saying it should have a 3.33GHz 6 core/12 thread processor (that goes to up 3.6 GHz with TurboBoost,) 32nm architecture, and Socket LGA1366 130W TDP. In a nutshell, throw this chip into a Mac Pro with some updated internals, and you have one hell of a machine.

Apple announces redesigned Mac Pro, sports Nehalem chips

Mac Pro Nehalem 2009 Continuing with all the Apple desktop releases today, the company has announced a newly-redesigned Nehalem-based Mac Pro. The price starts at $2,499, which gets you a 2.66GHz quad-core Intel Xeon 3500, 3GB RAM, and a 640GB hard drive. If an 8-core system is more your thing, you can grab a Mac Pro with two 2.26GHz quad-core Nehalems, with 6GB RAM, for $3,299. The Nehalem chips support HyperThreading, so you get double the amount of virtual cores as you do real cores, and they support triple RAM data rate. As in customary with all the new Apple computers, the new Mac Pro sports a Mini DisplayPort, which means it is usable with the LED Cinema Display.

Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1 Released

If you are pushing a Mac Pro, time to fire up Software Update, as Apple has just pushed out the Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.1. What’s it do? Straight from the horse’s mouth:

The SMC Firmware Update adjusts fan behavior in Mac Pro. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder and will launch automatically. Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the process.

So there you have it - fan behavior upgrade. Not too exciting, but still important.

Apple 8-Core Mac Pro Shipping

A few days ago, Apple announced that the Mac Pro would now become available with dual Quad-Core Intel Xeon Clovertown processors, each running at 3.0 GHz. We have received reports from readers who ordered the octo-core Macs that they have received shipping notifications. So why aren’t we more excited? Well, the price difference between the 3.0 GHz quad-core Mac Pro and the 3.0 GHz 8-core Mac Pro is $700. However, move that $700 elsewhere, say, to extra RAM, and you walk away with a quad-core Mac with 4-6GB of RAM. To us, that is just a much better deal all around - you know, what with there being a severe lack of programs that can take advantage of four cores, let alone eight.

RAM for Mac Pro Is Huge…Huger Than A Zune!

Alright, so we got ourselves some new RAM to throw into a Mac Pro, and the first thing that struck us was just how huge these sticks od DDR2-667 PC-5300 sticks of RAM actually are. I mean, they’re monstrous. So what do we do? Put do a quick size comparison with the current king of large in the gadget world - Microsoft’s Zune. What do you know? The RAM even beat the Zune when it came to thickness…so you know that’s some thick RAM. Check out an alternate size comparison shot after the break.
