USB Desktop Mini-Lamp Adjusts

For a little extra light on your desktop when others are sleeping or when you have to work late, this USB Mini-Lamp may be useful when you only need a small amount. Energy efficient, it is 5.6 x 5.6 x 38 cm and weighs 156g. With three LEDs, it has an on/off switch and can be adjusted by its metal gooseneck. Add an extra long cable and you could have yourself a decent night light. Recommended for indoor use only, the plug and play light is available for $17.00.

Contact Lens is Almost Bionic

Quick, somebody call Steve Austin. The University of Washington has created a bionic eye, well almost. The contact lens can zoom in on images and facts are created in a field of view. It then sends the information so that recipients can see some form of light. While they are mostly intended to help those who are visually impaired, future applications include “holographic driving control panels and even as a way to surf the Web on the go.” The results of UW’s research was shown at the recent Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ international conference.

Rug Finds Your Way at Night

Wouldn’t it be nice to get up at night for a bathroom jaunt and not worry about tripping over something in the dark? Engineering students Leona Dean and Zoe Robson from London South Bank University have created the Footlume, an electroluminescent rug. Using rechargeable batteries, its light is controlled by a person’s weight. Dean says that it can also “provide ambient mood lighting or flash in time to music as a talking point at a party.”

The prototype will be on display at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show in London this month. The thought occurs to us that if it responds to humans, it will do the same with nocturnal pets and the idea may backfire if they decide to play “chase the light” as our cat does.

Alien Abduction Lamp to go into production

As you may recall, we introduced you to the Alien Abduction Lamp last year, a prototype designed by Lasse Klein complete with a pulsating beam. Now it turns out that because of the hype, this is one idea that has reached fruition. Although no date has been set for its sale and there is no final word on whether it will be made in plastic or metal and glass, we are pleased that it will be coming to market. New to the lamp will be human and bovine abductees, for it is well known that aliens love people and cows. We’ll keep you posted on when the UFO becomes available.

Turn on Mini-Traffic Light

Senses Make Music Combos

We dig anything that makes music electronically, especially if it involves a touch of creativity. Unità Zero takes the five senses and users hands and feet to create its own tunes. It consists of light feedback, video sequencing, and audio mixing. With 5 platform assemblies, the thought behind it is, “Five are the senses, many more the combinations of feelings. If senses describe reality, their combination is an ideal and intangible depiction.”

What more can we say except where does taste come in? Unità Zero makes its debut at dorkbot in Germany this week.

Lightsaber Lamps Shine On

Space Projector is Groovy

Check back to some of those early videos on 60’s shows such as “Shindig” and “Hullabaloo” and look at the far out backgrounds. Now you can have that again with Mathmos Design Studio’s Space Projector. At a size of 9.75 x 9.5-inches, it consists of the gadget itself with a 12V 35mm closed dichroic spot, a 20W Bulb, and one gel. At a price of $129.00 we think it is safe to tell you that we achieved the same effect with a small lamp, and a petri dish filled with water, oil, and food coloring.

Designers Create Lamps for Geeks

We have discovered a new home for creative types called GNR8 Pipeline. Still in beta, it features such prototypes as these lamps. This Mosaic Pixellated piece, designed by &Design, says “the play of light through the myriad cubes has to be seen to be truly appreciated.” We also found this DNA Lamp built by Büro Für Form, perfect for any geek’s lab.
