Conserve Energy with these LED Christmas Lights

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Smart Home,

LED Christmas Lights So we recently told you how the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is conserving energy by switching from incandescent to LED lights. If you read the story and found yourself wishing you could do the same…here’s your chance. A company called Green Home is selling LED Christmas bulbs in both the “traditional” and “globe” styles (pictured). The upstart company claims their LED lights are 60 times more efficient than regular bulbs, so you’ll save energy and cash…which you can put towards those holiday gifts. The “traditional” bulbs start at 12.50 USD, while the “globes” begin at $15.

Twelve 5-9’s Q comes in a gun metal or brushed silver finish with a stainless steel strap and 26 multi-colored LEDs. Push a button once for a random pattern, twice to skip that function. As with other watches from TF, it will take a bit of work to be able to tell time with its 12-5-9 method. Fête Keeps Constant Temperature

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Smart Home, Misc. Tech,

Fête Serving PlatesRosalin Chanyasak has designed this prototype for those of us that prefer our hot food to remain that way for more than a minute or two. The Fête Serving Plates use thermoelectric technology to maintain either hot or cold temperatures. Made of polycarbonate, they are dishwasher safe and come with covers so that you can pop them in the fridge if you have leftovers. LED icons show the ingredient list for alergy info, although we are pretty sure in most instances you would know that anyway.

Mario Shroom Lamps Shine by USB

USB Mushroom LampWe cannot believe the overabundance of USB gadgets that continue to pour into our e-mail boxes at an alarming rate. It may have something to do with putting out one more gadget before the holidays that we cannot do without. We know we have lots of Mario fans out there so we had to include these Mushroom Lamps. Made with a white LED, it is 13 cm around with a base size of 10.8 x 14 cm and weighs 161g. If you don’t have an available USB port, just pop in 4 AA batteries (not included.) It available in three colors for only $13.00.

(Thanks, Fanny)

Ski SuitSpace Suit

This is what the well-dressed ski bum will be wearing in the future. Presented as part of Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics, the LED-lit ski suit was designed by Willy Bogner. Solar-powered, it has an optical output ration of 55 Lumens/Watts. Also featured was the “Private Space Suit” with its flexible LED panel that can go on a jacket or pants with a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. We hope that Germany has a lot more sun during its winter than we do or the clothing will be merely expensive and gaudy.

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree to rock LEDs

Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree

Let it be known that we New Yorkers take our “going green” seriously. The newly arrived Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree—like its holiday arch-rival the New Year’s Eve Ball—is replacing its incandescent bulbs with energy-friendly LED lights, 30,000 of them to be exact.  This means the 84-foot tall Norway Spruce’s electricity consumption will be reduced from 3,510 to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day (the savings equals the monthly consumption of a 2000-square-foot home). Plus, when the tree is taken down in January, it will become lumber for houses built by Habitat for Humanity (take that New Years Ball!).  If you’re in New York this holiday season, pay this tree the props it deserves by visiting between 5:30 am and 11:30 pm.

Umbrella Issues Daily Report

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Science,

AF UmbrellaFor those of you who are never sure when to take your umbrella with you, the Ambient Forecasting Umbrella receives a daily report from Accuweather for about 150 U.S. locations. It also has blue LEDs that will flash if rain or snow is on the way. At a size of 41 1/2 x 58-inch diameter, the push-button opening umbrella also has network signal and low battery indicators, and runs on a single C battery (not included.) We think that for the $99.99 price, we would just as soon only have the handle, because if a huge thunderstorm is on the way, you definitely do not want to be under metal.
