Sound System Keeps to Itself
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Home Entertainment, Music, Science,
Chan-Hui Lee and his team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology purport that someday we will be able to listen to music within a Personal Sound System that will not bother others standing outside it. Their prototype features 9 1/2-inch speakers arranged in a row. They found that there was a 20 decibel difference between the center and the outside, comparable to a regular conversation and a whisper. Lee foresees the technology being utilized eventually for cell phones and PDAs. We would just settle for using it on the neighbors’ backyard barbecues.

The Korean Company 3DIS has come up with an LCD monitor that allows you to see in 3D without the silly glasses. The 1040S utilizes ALT (Advanced Layer Technology) which results in a clearer, brighter image for the Parallax Barrier type screen. The monitor also allows a wider viewing angle and can change from 2D to 3D with a single switch. The Korean company’s CEO Sun Joo Lee claims that there is an increasing demand for 3D in today’s market and hopes to adapt the technology for laptops. We can’t really see much of a view from this image, but the 1040S will be on display during the CES 2008 in January if you would like a personal peek.

ROMI, the Giant Furby, is Unveiled
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, CES 2007, Misc. Tech, Science, Wireless / WiFi,
ETRI has developed ROMI, a Korean bot that will make its debut at next week’s CES 2007. The robot transmits video with its Wireless/CMDA connection, sees through a camera, and can relay information to your PC or phone. He obeys commands by voice activation of its name. While you can probably give it the most basics of demands such as, “ROMI walk roll” and “ROMI gimme five
none” we have a hunch that this bot is not much more than a glorified Furby.
