Dell Adamo XPS targets MacBook Air sexiness
Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Design, PC / Laptop

As if CEATEC Japan wasn’t exciting enough for tech enthusiasts, Dell had a press conference to show off the Adamo XPS. You can get a glimpse of it in the image above. The man you see clutching onto it for dear life is Dell VP Alex Gruzen, who had this to say about the 9.99 millimeter notebook: “When you see it, when you touch it, you’ll lust after it.”
He then went on to put it away, neglecting to give any information about the internals. We don’t have a price from Dell either, but we do know that custom lids and designs add $40-85 to the total cost.

Posted by Mark Rollins Categories: Home Entertainment, Music, Wireless / WiFi

Here’s an interesting stereo from JVC known as NX-TC5, which includes the usual such as an AM/FM tuner, iPod dock, and a CD player to “rip audio to MD or USB stick at 4x speeds.”
Some of the more unusual features include the movable front-panel and a motion-activated 4.3-inch display. There is 512MB on board for photos, but the video playback uses a built-in 1 Seg digital TV tuner or WMV video stored on USB media. The TC5 should launch in Japan late next month for ¥62,000 (about $655) or ¥52,000 (about $549) if you want the NX-TC3, which lacks MD support.

Japan’s Black Wii Box
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Culture, Nintendo, Special Editions, Wii

Continuing the trend of Japanese gamers getting the premium Nintendo goods while us in the US just get to watch, Nintendo is set to release a black Wii over in the Land of the Rising Sun. Sure, it’s the same console, but the Wii and WiiMote are a shiny black, rather than the glossy white we are all used to. Oh, and here’s the box. The black Wii hits Japan store shelves on August 1.

Segway May Become Street Legal in Japan
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Transportation
Segways have been prohibited from Japanese streets (and sidewalks) by Japanese road laws, but now, because of Yokahama’s push for tourists and use of environmentally friendly vehicles, the city and Segway Japan are apparently in negotiations to make them street legal. The average price of one in Japan is $10,000.00 and about 100 of the vehicles have been sold so far for use on private property. We guess that means they may also embrace GM’s new PUMA.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech
A 16 year-old private school student wanted to play online casino games, so he opened an account under an adult’s name. According to police records, the Japanese boy bought an ID and password of a Web bank account for ¥17,000 from a housewife after soliciting on an Internet bulletin board. In July, the student had registered to play with his mom’s credit card but ended up with about ¥1.3 million in debts. What’s scary here is not only did he manage to amass the debt, but that he could steal both his mom’s ID and acquire a Web bank account as a minor.

Those in Japan waiting for the big one can breathe a semi-sigh of relief. NTT has established an Urgent Earthquake Bulletin service that opens an alert window automatically on their PCs in case of a pending disaster. An alarm goes off and an estimated seismic intensity is displayed as well as arrival time. A standalone Flash FLET’S Type is also available from NTT. It has flashing LED lights and an audible alarm, arrival time and countdown. NTT claims that their service is more precise and up to date than others available.

Order Video and Eats on Your Wii
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Nintendo, Wii
Japan has finally realized the full monetary potential of the Wii. Beginning next year, streaming video will be available through Nintendo and partnering companies. While players are watching some of that content, they will be able to order sushi, pizza, and Japanese and Chinese food. And if Japanese gamers don’t know what to order, the roulette mode will randomly make a selection. If it picks pizza, it’s time to get back to the Wii.

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Corporate News, PC / Laptop

So where has Gateway been lately? Probably working on its own netbook, although since Acer is now its parent company, reports say that it is simply a cousin to Acer’s Aspire. The LT1001j holds 1GB RAM, has a 8.9-inch display with WSVGA (1,024x600) resolution, a 0.3M webcam, and USB 2.0 and SD card slots. Weighing only 1.06kg, it is powered by an Intel Atom N270 processor and Windows XP OS. Due out in Japan this month, the claim is that because of the similarities, this one won’t hit the States.

Space Barley Taste Testing Parties
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Science, Transportation
Space Barley is finally ready for humans. The grain was kept aboard the ISS for 5 months in 2006 and the beer was made from barley that descended from that batch. The Japanese company Sapporo provided the original seeds that eventually produced 100 liters and will be holding tasting parties at their six factories in January. About 60 people will be selected by lottery to attend the event. The project was designed to come up with a new type of barley that can grow in harsh environments on our planet.
