iPhone Video Recording

We’ve been hearing that video recording would be coming to the for a while, but now we’ve got the evidence to back it up. Our friends over at MacRumors got ahold of a leaked screenshot showing a toggle within the Camera app that lets you choose between snapping a photo and recording a video. In order to enable the feature, plist config files in the current firmware need to be edited so as to make it appear that a video camera is present. Other hidden features include a compass, camera auto-focus, and voice control, which we assume is for voice dialing.

One would imagine that new features like these would require some sort of newly updated iPhone to take advantage of them. Coincidentally, the iPhone 3.0 software will be made available in June—just in time for the next iPhone to launch. We are officially excited.

iPhone Scandock

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Handhelds, Misc. Tech,

ScandockKyle A. Koch was really jazzed with his iPhone because it kept everything in one place. He would snap pictures of things, such as class assignments, so he wouldn’t lose them. But since they didn’t always come out clear enough, he designed the Scandock. At a size of 15.5 x 9.5 x 15-inches, it is made of corrugated cardboard and comes flat packed for a mere $16.00. He will engrave a logo on it and you can download his .eps files for free. There is limited distribution of the Scandock, but contact Kyle to work something out.

Many who upgraded to firmware 3.0 when it was made available have complained of much sluggishness taking over their iPhone or iPhone 3G, so let’s hope that upgrading to beta 2 cleans up some of that, for those people who didn’t downgrade back to 2.2.1. Developers, you can grab iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 right now.

Skype on iPhone and Blackberry

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Internet,

iPhoneYou can now receive Skype on your iPhone/touch, and Blackberry owners can look forward to the service in May. COO Scott Durchslag claims that it has been the #1 request from its current customers. More than 400 million already use the service with their PC, so that is a pretty good target area. One of its pluses is that subscribers can use the phone numbers in their existing iPhone address book. There is no charge for the download and calls between Skype users are free.
