Apple releases iOS 6 with Passbook, new Maps, Facebook integration, and more

iOS 6 features

Just as we predicted, Apple has released iOS 6 to the world. If you have a recent iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, this update is for you. With iOS 6, Apple has introduced its new Maps application that replaces Google's offering, a digital wallet in Passbook, built-in Facebook integration with Single Sign On, and an expansion to what Siri can do and help you with. In all, Apple says there are over 200 new features waiting for its users in iOS 6. To get the update, you can grab it over the air (OTA) if you are running iOS 5--just go into Setting, tap on General, then select Software Update. All users can also simply connect their devices to iTunes and checking for the update that way.

iOS 6 is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, fourth- and fifth-generation iPod touch, iPad 2, and the new iPad. Jump past the break for a rundown of all 200 new features.

Apple sold over 2 million iPhone 5 units in first 24 hours, doubles iPhone 4S

iPHone 5 double

If there were any lingering doubts about the success and popularity of the iPhone brand, then allow Apple's announcement of 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders in the first 24 hours of availability put all of them to rest. Like gangbusters, it shattered last year's previous record holder set by the iPhone 4S, which clocked in at 1 million pre-orders. Yes, the iPhone 5 doubled the previous record. As noted by Gear Live over the weekend, pre-orders slipped to two-week shipping times after just 56 minutes after going live at 12.01AM PST on September 14th. Analysts are expecting 10 million units to be sold by the end of the September month and about 40-50 million more units by the end of the holiday quarter. So the message is clear, customers want iPhone 5. Full Apple press release after the break.

iOS 6 golden master download

On the heels of today's iPhone 5 event, Apple has just seeded the iOS 6 Golden Master to developers, alongside Xcode 4.5 GM. Build 10A403 is the final version, and iOS 6 will be released on September 19 to the general public. The updated mobile OS will be compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4th- and 5th- generations, iPad 2, and the new iPad.

iOS 6 to be released on September 19

iOS 6 September 19

We just received a fairly obvious tip that makes perfect sense to us--Apple is set to release iOS 6 to the general public on September 19th. That would put its release two days before the rumored launch date of the iPhone 5, which is in line with all iOS software release ever since iPhone OS 2.0 launched a couple of days prior to the release of the iPhone 3G back in July of 2008. We expect that Apple will release a Golden Master version of iOS 6 tomorrow after the iPhone 5 event.

iOS 6 brings new features like Passbook, shared Photo Streams, expanded Siri functionality, Apple Maps, and more, and will be compatible with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, ipod touch (fourth generation,) and all iPads.

It’s official: Apple will unveil iPhone 5 on September 12

Apple iPhone 5 event invitation

It's been rumored and expected that Apple would announce the iPhone 5 on September 12, and this morning it's been confirmed. In fact, based on the official invitation from Apple, not only has the date been confirmed, but the name of the next iPhone seems to be locked in as well. As you can see above, the 12 is putting off a shadow in the shape of a 5. Of course, the iPhone 4 was actually the fourth iPhone that Apple released, but if the next device truly is called iPhone 5, it will be the sixth iPhone released by the company. Odd, but for the average consumer, we think it makes the most sense (new iPad, notwithstanding.)

The iPhone 5 is expected to sport a new 1136x640 16:9 widescreen display, a thinner profile, and ship with newly redesign Apple headphones. Check out all the iPhone 5 news and rumors we compiled thus far.

Just how thin will the next iPhone be?

iPhone thickness comparison

It's pretty much a given that Apple likes to make its products as thin as possible, and it looks like the next-generation iPhone 5 will get that same treatment. An image has been put together by Sohu that shows what the next iPhone looks like compared against the iPhone 4S and iPhone 3GS in terms of thickness. As you can see, the front and back glass don't protrude from the metal frame, making the next iPhone even thinner if the leaked design is to be believed. We'll know for sure on September 12.
