iPhone 2.2: iTunes Wi-Fi Store supports podcasts over the air, not music

iTunes Wi-Fi Store iPhone 2.2

So, we knew that would bring OTA podcast downloads in the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, so we had to try and see if it would allow us to download anything else over the air as well. Unfortunately, music is still a no-go. You can’t access the Featured or Top Tens sections in iTunes on the iPhone, unless you have a Wi-Fi connection. Meanwhile, the Podcasts section supports both audio and video podcasts, which puts a smile on our faces.

iPhone 2.2 firmware

Well, I guess that November 21 rumor was true, because the firmware update is now available. This one is pretty hefty in the feature department too, so color us excited. You’ve got the a few nice enhancements to Maps, including Google Street View, public transit directions, walking directions, and the ability to share your GPS location with others via email. Speaking of email, the Mail client enjoys some stability improvements in this release as well, along with better handling of wide HTML email. Safari picks up performance improvements, we get the promise of fewer set-up failures and call drops, and better sound quality for Visual Voicemail.

If you’re a podcast lover (and seriously, we know that you love our shows,) you’ll be ecstatic to hear that, finally, podcasts are available for download in the iTunes application. Seriously, this thing is packed. Connect your up to your computer and grab the 246MB update now.

iPhone 2.2 firmware drops November 21?

iPhone 2.2 firmware

The rumor mill is buzzing today about the soon-to-be-released firmware. iPhone Hellas is saying that we can expect iPhone 2.2 to be available for download on November 21, a mere 10 days away. We have no reason to doubt, since the 2.2 firmware has been in beta for a while now, and everything sounds like it working nicely. With iPhone OS 2.2 you can expect things like walking directions, Google Street View, public transportation information, the ability to share your location with others, over-the-air podcast updates and downloads, and your overall bug fixery.

This is certainly an update we are primed and ready to enjoy, so let’s hope this rumor holds true, cool?

Apple Passes RIM And Becomes Number 2 Smartphone Maker

Posted by Ponzi Black Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Corporate News

iphone 3gAn analyst has confirmed that has made it to number 2 where smartphone vendors are concerned.  The has become a holder of 17.3 percent of the market share with RIM trailing at 15.2 percent.  Apple also came in with the highest marks in customer satisfaction, operation, physical design, operating system, battery aspects, and features.  RIM could bounce back to the 2nd place mark with the Bold and Storm, but with the growing sales of iPhone and the “coolness” of the Apple brand, it will certainly be a challenge for RIM.  The results are due to the 6.9 million iPhones shipped during the summer months with no signs of slowdown even though the economy has moved in the other direction.

AT&T says iPhone 3G tethering coming “soon”

iPhone 3G tetheringNow that’s what we’re talking about! AT&T Movility President Ralph De La Vega just dropped the official word that the will be gaining the ability to be wirelessly tethered to notebooks, giving you 3G internet access on your laptop wherever your iPhone has a 3G signal. Just about every other smartphone that is the caliber of the iPhone has this ability, so it’s been a long time coming. No definite date given or anything, but at least now we know that iPhone tethering is on the horizon.

Wal-Mart selling iPhone 3G during Black Friday?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Handhelds, Rumors

Wal-Mart iPhone 3G

You know, as much as we aren’t fan of Wal-Mart, we understand that it helps get products out to the masses. The latest rumor has Wal-Mart selling the during the lead-up to this years Black Friday. This would make Wal-Mart the second big box retailer in the US to carry the iPhone, with the first being Best Buy. As is the policy with Best Buy, AT&T, and the Apple Store, we’d expect that you would have to activate the iPhone at Wal-mart.

If this rumor proves true, we expect a lot more iPhone 3Gs to be sold this holiday, and by that, we mean even more than the enormous amount that we had already predicted. Hey, AT&T, would you mind beefing up your 3G access a bit more? It’s gonna get crowded.

Apple readying CDMA iPhone?

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Handhelds, Rumors

CDMA EVDO iPhone

The rumor mill has been buzzing today with whispers that may be readying a CDMA version of the , which would have EVDO support. So, when would this one be announced? Apparently, at MacWorld 2009 in January. Unfortunately, we are gonna have to call shenanigans on this one. After all, Verizon Wireless was supposed to get the iPhone originally, but were too wrapped up in a traditional cell carrier mindset to see that it would be a boon to their business. Then, AT&T came in and signed a multi-year exclusivity contract in the USA. Plus, it’s not like Apple needs more distribution for the iPhone to make it a success, it’s doing just fine. We think they’d rather focus their iPhone staff on the next iteration of the phone, rather than going sideways to make one that will work on Verizon’s network. Sure, we could be wrong, but…nah…we don’t think so.

iPhone 2.2 beta seeded to developers

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Handhelds, Software

iPhone 2.2

Right on the heels of the release that seems to cure just about all our iPhone-related woes (although, honestly, some are still there,) Apple has just released iPhone 2.2 into beta, and seeded it to their iPhone devs. Officially, we are talking about iPhone OS 2.2 beta 1, and as such, we have no timetable or anything as to when this will actually hit the masses. But still, it’s nice to know that it’s coming, right? What would you like to see addressed in iPhone 2.2?

Jailbreak iPhone 2.1 with PwnageTool and QuickPWN

iPhone 2.1 pwnageSince everything and their mother has been writing in requesting follow-up on the iPod touch 2.1 jailbreak, we figured we’d better respond. Latest is that you can now jailbreak as well, and the GUI version of the iPod touch 2.1 firmware is available as well (thanks for letting us know, QuickPWN!). The one thing that isn’t yet done is the jailbreak of the newer iPod touch 2G, but that is only because no one on the Dev Team has happened to pick one up yet. I’m sure we’ll be seeing it in the next few days. You just can’t keep these guys down.
