Poken Links Social Networking
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Accessories, USB, Internet,
Social networking freaks may already be aware of Poken. This interesting concept combines that with a unique cutesy animal device that will keep all your Facebook, MySpace and other sites’ information. Your Poken pokes another one in real time and you can exchange info so that you can find them next time you go virtual. In actual fact, the Poken is a USB connector with basic personal data. The site is fairly new, but they are planning on adding more features like message sending. That is a good thing, because it’s been our experience that we meet most chums online first rather than the opposite.

The chain announced that it has received more than a million dollars in mobile Web sales in the last six months. This equals out to over $1 billion in overall online sales. The site features their menu, special offers, locator and account registration. They also have an iPhone friendly menu. We can’t wait until the trend catches on and we can order our Moo Goo Gai Pan while on the way home.

Purina Critter Carols
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech,
If you love your dog, you probably spend some of your Thanksgiving watching the National Dog Show (a pointer won it this year.) The sponsors of the event, Purina, have made an e-card site to send greeting to all your friends this holiday season. Head over to Critter Carols, upload your pet’s face (this is Amazing Grace,) add text and music and let everyone know just how weird you get during the last couple of weeks. By the way, this app will take you longer than most to get it right, so expect a learning curve.

Facebook Users Get Busted
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Editorial, Internet,
Once again, we are amazed at the apparent idiocy of people who are too casual when on the Internet. Tom Stones, a Tesco store worker in the UK, called in sick, but later posted on Facebook. He now faces disciplinary action. Last month, 13 Virgin Atlantic crew members used the same means to trash their employer and were consequently fired. Australian Kyle Doyle called in sick after a night out. His managers found him updating his Facebook page. Thank goodness that those of us who work/play on the Net a gazillion hours a day know that it’s part of the gig. If that’s not you, save the Facebook updates when that you can get away with it
are legally off the clock.

Can We Expect a Return of the Fairness Doctrine?
Posted by Cynthia Guenthner Categories: Media,
Following the Democrats’ capturing the White House and gaining 6 seats in the Senate and 19 in the House, there’s a good possibility we’ll see a revival of the so-called “Fairness Doctrine.” Sal alluded to this in one of his blogs, and I’d like to further elaborate.
From 1949-1987, the Fairness Doctrine ruled the broadcast industry. It was originally designed to ensure a “balance” of opinions over the airwaves when only three or four major networks dominated radio and the medium of television was still in its infancy. By the time the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), during the Reagan administration, abolished the Doctrine, cable and satellite TV had offered competitive alternatives to the big broadcast networks.

Skype IM+ Goes Mobile
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smartphones, Handhelds, Internet,
If you have a mobile device with SkypeOut credits and Internet connection, you can now get IM+ for voice and text communication to others with the service, landlines and those on MySpace. It works with no delay with any 3G/GSM/CDMA network, even one with a lower data transfer rate. There is a one time fee with all updates included and you have the option of redirecting incoming calls to voicemail to listen later. The IM+ service is available for $19.95.

YouTube Goes Full-Length
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: MGM, Home Entertainment, Rumors, Full Episodes,
Tired of snippets? Bored with small clips, when you want the whole show? YouTube will soon team up with MGM to offer full-length movies and TV shows through the video-sharing site.
At the start of this partnership, YouTubers will have the chance to watch original American Gladiators episodes in a single channel, while another channel will offer the films Bulletproof Monk and The Magnificent Seven. Clips from other movies, including Legally Blonde, will also be available.
Still not excited? Everything that’s offered will still be free! Ads will run alongside the videos to make up for this lack of pay-to-watch fees. Last month, YouTube worked out similar partnerships so the site could start airing full-length episodes of Star Trek and Beverly Hills, 90210.

DIY Plant Twitter Kit
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Misc. Tech, Science,
If you believe in the plant that has its own blog, then you might also like to know that you can get your plant to Twitter. A CERN scientist supposedly created this Plant Twitter Kit. Assemble it (some soldering required,) then connect it to your leafy friend and subscribe to its feed, and it will tell you when it needs water or complain if you give too much. We’re still not sure that the gadget will work, and it seems an overpriced $99.99, but hey, if it works on your philodendron, it may work on your puppy.
