Internet Voted Greatest Invention

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet,

No CrocsIn a survey of more than 5000 by News.com.au and Timesonline, 40% said that the Internet is the greatest invention since sliced bread. Coming in second was penicillin with a vote of 19.6%, while the TV remote captured 10.2%. On the other side of the survey, 40.8% of the voters said that reality TV was the worst thing to come out, followed by loud TV ads at 15.6% and Crocs (the shoes, we presume) with a vote of 15.3%. Oddly enough, Sudoku made both lists. Check out the complete survey.

Verizon FiOS speeds increasing to 50 Mbps

FiOS speed upgrade

For all you subscribers out there, Verizon just announced this morning that they are going to be upping a couple of their speed tiers across the country, beginning next week. Of course, you need to live in one of the FiOS-covered areas in one of the 16 states where the service is available, like we do.

So, first things first - if you are in New York or Virginia, don’t expect any changes. You guys are already enjoying the upgraded speeds that the rest of us have been waiting for. For the rest of us though, two changes are in order. First, the 30/15 speed tier will be going away, and will be replaced by the newer 50/20 tier. Crazy, we know. The 50/20 speed will remain at the same $139 per month cost. Those of you on the 15/15 symmetrical tier will also say goodbye to your current speeds, as you will be upgraded to the new 20/20 speed tier, and it will remain at the same $64 per month cost.

The lower tiers are getting upgrades as well, as 15/2 becomes 20/5, and 5/2 becomes 10/2. It should be noted that recently bumped up their speeds across the board to 16/2. I guess Verizon was just waiting on Comcast before spreading their NY and VA speeds to the rest of the country.

Maury’s Baby Maker Website

Baby MakerBaby Maker Result

We aren’t really into the Maury Povich Show, but we decided to try out his baby maker anyway. You simply take two images and circle the major features and voila! you make a baby. Because some of us don’t do pictures, we tried our South Park pic and an Elvis M&M. The results are fairly gruesome, don’t you think? Even by cartoon standards, this is one ugly baby, and a more difficult program than most we have shown you. Try one for yourself, but don’t expect spectacular results.

Get Discovered at the City of Fame

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Internet, Music,

City of Fame logoChances are you won’t be discovered at a drug store counter or the corner pub that showcases local bands, but now you have a better chance at this new website, the City of Fame. Upload your music videos or screen tests and perhaps you will be noticed, not that we think a lot of agents will be hanging on the site. Still, it is a step up from YouTube and MySpace. Registration is free and we wonder, if you make it, will the site ask for a percentage?

(Thanks, Frani)

Internet Charges May Rise to a Whole ‘Nother Level

ATT&TWe remember a time (about 15 years ago) when we were allotted only so many hours on the Net. If you were really addicted, that meant you either had to go online with a stopwatch, reconnect occasionally, or be charged for a business account. Nowadays you can go 24/7 and most providers will offer you a good deal for doing so. For example, knowing that about 1 in seven no longer have landlines, Verizon will be offering discounts to those who don’t but order Internet or TV service. Their Flex Double Play begins this week allowing customer discounts of $8.00 to $12.00 a month if you combine their wireless plan with FiOS TV or broadband.

On the swing side, AT&T is thinking of charging more for those who download too much data. Spokesperson Michael Coe claims that about 5% of their DSL customers use 46% of their bandwidth, while overall usage doubles every year and a half. Time Warner is already charging its customers in Beaumont, Texas, who go over their bandwidth limit $1.00 per gigabyte. If you are one of those who downloads movies and TV shows, especially in hi-def, don’t move to the Lonestar state.

What do you guys think? Should we be charged extra for services that companies are pushing on us to the max? Or should we all go out and purchase a Roku and spend the $8.99 a month before our Internet overcharges become excessive?

Apple Store Down

In a move that is completely shocking to most, on the morning of a keynote, the Apple Online Store has gone down! What in the blazes?!

In all seriousness though, at the very least, this confirms that we will definitely be seeing some new hardware when takes the stage in 15 minutes or so. Or Mobile Me subscription packages.

Amazon is down. What?

Amazon.com down

Don’t look now (well, you can if you want,) but the biggest online retailer in the universe, , is currently down. Apparently, they’ve been gone for about an hour and a half at this point. Visiting the site results in the cryptic “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable” message. That’s never good. We actually had something we wanted to purchase with overnight shipping, and if they don’t make it back online, it looks like we will be out of luck. Oh well, I guess we can use competing sites. Don’t forget, in your time of need, you can always use a Newegg promo code to save some cash. Especially while Amazon is having trouble.

Did you know that for every minute of downtime suffered, Amazon is losing out on roughly $31,000.00 USD in sales?

EDIT: Okay, looks like they’re back.
