Bloglines Goes Bad

If you are a subscriber of Bloglines, you may have noticed the frequency of red exclamation marks and error messages. This is what is known as a broken system. They are no longer updating some of the feeds. We understand that they have received numerous complaints and whining, but our solution is to switch to another RSS reader, a simple enough process. Click “Export” on the bottom left, save the opml file and import it to the reader of your choice. In an Internet that has so many choices, we are allowed to say, “We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore.”

Update: It would appear that all that whining helped. Many of the feeds are updating again, however we are going to keep our backup feed all the same.

Tom Cruise Dead! No, Wait, Just His Career

An agent for Tom Cruise was forced into releasing a statement today regarding the actor after rumors spread through cyberspace that he’s dead. The story said Cruise had tumbled in New Zealand, suffering fatal injuries.

“This is completely not true. Tom is not in New Zealand, nor has he been there recently. This is erroneous and unreliable Internet garbage,” were the words from Jeff Raymond, Cruise PR rep.

The news quickly made the rounds of U.S.-based gossip sites before moving all the way to Singapore and beyond, putting Cruise in the spotlight for the first time in several weeks. Two years ago, stories circulated that actor Tom Hanks fell from the same cliffs mentioned in the report.

Katie Holmes, wife to Cruise, will appear on Broadway this very night to officially open her show, “All My Sons.” Cruise will no doubt appear in the audience, proving that he’s hale and healthy after all. It’s really his career which has been taking a plummeting nose-dive, not the man himself.

Eloff-Berger-Pichlmair’s claim is, “Seven mile boots, the magical footwear known from folk tales, enables its owner to travel seven miles with one step. With little effort one can cross the countries, to be present wherever it seems suitable and to become a cosmopolitan flaneur with the world as the street.”

In ordinary terms, the interactive prototype shoes allow users to search online chatrooms automatically while moving and talking when standing still because spoken text comes out of them. Channels are selected according to the wearers preferred activity or topic.

Internet Surfing Encourages Brain Activity

Senior Surfers Next time your spouse/partner complains that you are on the Internet too much, you can site this study that will be in an upcoming American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. The report suggests that middle-aged and older adults who use the Net may get a brain boosting. Using 24 “normal” volunteers between the ages of 55 and 76, half of the group had previous experience surfing. The participants showed similar brain activity when reading a book and those who went online also registered activity in the frontal, temporal and cingulate areas, which are those that control decision making and complex reasoning.

InstantAction Offers Mac Games Online

InstantAction has announced the debut of their open beta for Mac OS X users. Gamers can register on the site and play Rokkitball, Marble Blast Online, Think Tanks and the FPS, Fallen Empire: Legions. Mac owners can also play PC users with cross platform compatibility. System requirements are Mac OS X 10.4.11 (or later) with Intel chipsets for some of the games, while others need Mac OS X v10.5.4. Safari 3 and Firefox 2 are supported. Check with the site for more specifics.

Celio Lowers Price on Redfly

Redfly If you were thinking of investing in Celio Redfly, now is the time. The smartphone terminal allows email access, web site viewing, application use and attachment reading. Connection of the screen and keyboard is wireless but there is no OS, CPU or storage capability. The Redfly usually sells for about $399.00, but if you purchase before October 31, the cost is only $199.00. While this seems a good deal for those with PDAs who want flexibility, let’s not forget that netbooks are getting less expensive as well.

IMDb Offers Free Internet Movies, TV

Amazon has announced that its subsidiary, IMDb, will be offering free recent and classic films such as “Planet of the Apes” and “The Madness of King George.” There are also trailers and short films. They say that over 6,000 titles are available and include episodes of new season shows like “30 Rock.” We checked out an episode on the site and noticed that it is about as free as regular TV, so expect some commercials, although not to the extent that you find on network television.

Verizon FiOS vs. Comcast: Feature-by-feature

Ten days ago, Verizon FiOS TV officially launched here in Washington state. I was actually invited to speak at the launch event that took place that day, alongside Verizon representatives, and local government officials. I was specifically chosen as a case study of just how good FiOS is, since I literally moved specifically because Comcast was way too slow for the things we expected out of our Internet connection here at Gear Live HQ. It was an event meant to talk up the advantages of FiOS over cable (specifically, Comcast, in this area). Obviously, with FiOS looming over their territory, Comcast went into damage control mode to combat Verizon’s claims that they were the best option for Internet and television services. We were sent both the FiOS press release and the Comcast press release, and we figured we would respond to the claims of each, point-by-point.

For some background, we’ve been Comcast customers for over six years, for both Internet and television services. When we moved for FiOS 15 months ago, Comcast was still our cable television provider. As of today, I am a FiOS customer for both Internet and television, and as of 10 days ago, am no longer a Comcast customer. Now, on with the comparisons.

What do we love about the Internet? That the incredibly gifted group Tally Hall can become such a hit on YouTube with their Internet Show that they made it all the way to the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. You go, guys!

What do we not love about the Internet? That commercial companies such as Procter & Gamble come up with a lame website and competition to get normally intelligent people to devise the next greatest catch phrase for Crest Whitening Expressions after Emeril Lagasse’s “Bam!”
