HP to Discontinue Digital Cameras

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Corporate News,

HP PhotosmartHewlett-Packard has decided to bow out of digital cam territory. They will stop making them and instead use $30 million to fine tune their Print 2.0 service, which makes Web reproduction easier. HP apparently could not keep up with its competitors, as its market share in the U.S. dropped from 15% during 2001 and ranking 3rd in the market, to a mere 4% this past June and dropping to 8th place. What does this move tell us? If you see any HP cameras on sale this holiday season at Big Lots, quietly walk away.

Posted by Lolita Beckwith Categories: Cameras,

Cat with Glow Eye before and after Ok, fess up. You know you take as many photos of your pets Fido and Woody as you do of your newborn. But we bet most of those photos have “glow eye”, where your pet’s retina has that eerie “Village of the Damned”-look much like “red eye” in humans. The folks at Hewlett-Packard feel your pain, so it’s introducing the R837, a digital camera with built-in software that replaces the glow with a more realistic black dot. It even adds a small white dot to the eye, to show the direction Woody is looking at. In addition to having 7.2 MP, a 3X optical zoom and 3” display, the R837 also includes software that does away with blemishes and wrinkles—in humans, not pets.
