Asus has released its M70 notebook with lots of features for Blu-ray fun. The WUXGA widescreen has 1920x1200 pixels with a 16:10 resolution, Al Light for auto-bright adjustment, and Splendid Video Intelligence Technology to improve its picture. The notebook also features a fingerprint scanner, Dolby sound from Altec Lansing Speakers, and a built-in 1.3M pixel swivel webcam. The touchpad can be converted to a control deck for music or video. Sony Unveils Mini-Cam

Sony has released a hi-def video camera, claiming that it is the smallest and lightest on the planet. Available in Japan later this month, the HDR-TG1 measures 1.3 x 4.7 x 2.5-inches and weighs a mere 10.6 oz. With storage of 55 minutes, the camcorder has a 2.7-inch touch LCD and resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. The cam comes with a start-up 4GB Pro Duo Mark2 media card. We dig Sony’s cameras and have used them for years, but we are thinking that with a price tag of 130,000 Yen ($1,271.00,) we think we will purchase two larger ones at half that amount.

Acer Brings HD to Gemstone Blue

Acer is taking their laptops and entertainment to a whole ‘nother level with their new Gemstone Blue line. The computers are meant for those who don’t travel much but still want the latest in high tech on a laptop. On sale next month, the Aspire 8920G will have 6 speakers and an 18.4-inch HD display with a 16:9 screen and 1920 x 1080 resolution. It also has a built-in Blu-ray drive and a price of $1,999.00. The Aspire 6920G comes with three speakers and a 16-inch screen and will carry a $1,699.00 price.

Future Shop Gives Credit for HD DVDs

Future Shop is offering $100.00 for your HD DVD player, but this deal comes with a catch. Between March 7 and April 3, you must use that credit on either a Samsung or LS Blu-ray/HD DVD Combo Player. They will also accept those from other retailers in addition to those from its parent company, Best Buy. Considering that Blu-ray players average around $500.00, you might want to hold on to your present one until you have more of a choice and better price point.
Circuit City, not to be outdone, will give store credit for HD players that were purchased in the past ninety days.

Buh Bye HD DVD

It’s official. Toshiba announced today that the end is here. In a public statement, Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO said, “While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”
The company will cease selling their products to retail dealers by the end of March, but promises to continue its product support to those who have already purchased HD products. They will continue to market standard DVD players and DVRs. Toshiba will now concentrate on other tech that supports hi-def, including NAND processing, next gen CPUs, small form factor hard disk drives, and those that utilize wireless and incryption technology.

Toshiba Concedes to Blu-ray

Toshiba has announced that it will stop using its HD DVD format. Since this company tried harder than most of the others, this undoubtedly marks the end of the disc war. The official announcement will probably be made in the next several days.
“We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business,” said a spokesperson from Toshiba who wished to remain anonymous. The company estimates they will lose hundreds of millions of dollars because of the concession.

Best Buy To Emphasize Blu-ray

Round two. In a “no surprise” move (since Netflix is doing the same), Best Buy said that it will recommend that its customers choose Blu-ray when purchasing a DVD Player/Recorder.
“Because we believe that Blu-ray is fast emerging as that single format, we have decided to focus on Blu-ray products,” said President and CEO Brian Dunn.
You will notice the hardware and software change by March, although they will also carry HD products. We suspect you will find them in the mark down aisle and, while you are there, check out the bargain DVDs.

Netflix to Go Blu-ray

Netflix has announced that it will only buy Blu-ray discs and phase out HD by the end of the year. We suspect that is because four of the six major studios have gone the same way. While this looks to be the end of the war, we are just not ready to go out and purchase a new player right away. We hope that Sony finally feels karma for their failed Betamax. We also discovered that Netflix will be only sending out standard DVDs by the end of this month.

As the 80th Annual Academy Awards inch ever closer, some of us are still scrambling to see the contenders in question before the big night. Those anxious to see their favorites before the inevitable acceptance speech or scowl-behind-forced-smile have the chance to watch a few in high-def this week.
On HD DVD is Elizabeth: The Golden Age, nominated for Cate Blanchett‘s performance and the opulent costumes. On Blu-ray are Across the Universe, nominated for its costumes, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, nominated for Casey Affleck‘s supporting performance.
Look for other nominees, brought to you in crystal clear high definition, throughout the month.

Happy Tuesday, all!
The big news this week is the release of Monty Python’s Life of Brian on Blu-ray. The classic film, walking the hyper-sensitive line between important social issues and side-splitting comedy, is easily one of the best from the Python team, and should have a place on every movie lover’s shelf. Why not own it in gorgeous 1080p resolution and Dolby 5.1 surround sound? The harmless religious satire is that much better.
On a side note, am I crazy, or has Warner started consistently releasing films on HD DVD weeks later than those released on Blu-ray? For instance, this week’s Blu-ray release, The Invasion, won’t come out on HD DVD until February 19. And it’s not this one time either—the list of upcoming titles from High-Def Digest shows a serious lag in Warner HD DVD releases. I realize that Warner is phasing the format out, but have they officially put HD DVD on the back burner?
