Nissan Leaf: Zero Emissions, Total Affordability

Nissan LEAF Speedometer

I think we all know that cars are one of the worst polluters on the planet today, and so I find it nice of Nissan to introduce the greener Leaf, a car that has zero emissions.  The Nissan Leaf has a lithium ion battery-powered chassis that is good for 160km (100 miles) on a single charge.  Best of all, its lack of a tailpipe can reduce one’s “carbon footprint” significantly.  I don’t have a price for it yet, but it should be “affordable” to the family of five that it has room for.  The car is slated to launch late next year in Japan, the United States, and Europe.

Green Energy Machine Recycles Waste

GEM

Businesses that have a few extra parking spaces and about $850,000 extra in their budget can invest in the GEM (Green Energy Machine) to crunch up trash. The generator accepts food, cardboard, plastic and organic waste, shreds it and turns it into pellets. These are then fed into a gasifier which produces synthetic gas that burns in a natural-gas microturbine. GEM will not accept metal and class because they have no energy content and can convert up to three tons of waste. Here’s hoping some enterprising person/company will create a GEM for the rest of us at lesser prices.

GM To Build Lithium-ion Plant

Richard WagonerIt seems that at least one of the “Big Three” of Detroit finally has caught on. Yesterday at the NAIAS, GM’s CEO G. Richard Wagoner Jr. announced that it is opening the first U.S. lithium-ion battery plant. They will be making them to go into their Chevy Volt, due out in 2012. GM has already invested over a billion dollars in the eco-friendly vehicle. They will also be erecting a research facility. This is good news for those who live in the beleaguered state in terms of jobs and better news for those who want to go green and do it American.

Holiday Gift Guide 2008: Belkin Conserve surge protector

Belkin ConserveWe know, you’re wondering why on Earth we’d be recommending a surge protector as a gift, right? Well, the Conserve line is actually pretty cool. In the interest of being green, we are recommending a power strip that is great for the eco-concious folks in your life. You’re able to turn off all connected devices with one switch. Outlets are spaced out to support those unsightly bulky ones, and there is even a remote you can use to control the flow of power. Since electronics pull power, even when powered off, that means you’re wasting electricity constantly unless you unplug your devices when you are done using them. The Belkin Concserve fixes that. They retail for $49.99, but we were able to find them for 24% less - $38.24 at Amazon.

MRM (Manufacturers Recycling Management) is trying to get us all to recycle our old electronics, taking away the need for disposing of your dead ones in the nearest dumpster when no one is looking. Joining Sharp Electronics Corporation and Toshiba America Consumer Products, Panasonic has now stepped up to create a nationwide program to recycle their goods. You simply drop off your unused products. It is available in ten states so far and they hope to expand to all 50 of them in the next 3 years. Look for further announcements in January.

Apple shipping iPhone USB power adapter in huge box

Posted by Aaron Zollo Categories: Accessories, USB, Apple, Peripherals,

iphone USB adapter large box has had a a mind for all things “green” as stated in their past two keynotes.  A few weeks back, Apple recalled the power adapters because the prongs were breaking off into the wall socket, which could cause an obvious jolt of unpleasant experiences.  Apple offered two ways to replace the USB adapter, by mail or by going to their stores. The people who chose to have it sent by mail have been surpised to find that the new, greener Apple has shipped the small adapter in a box that about 100 times its size.  I am sure Apple will take notice and do something about it, but it seems all the eggs are not in the basket when it comes to their “green initiative.”  This just proves that going “green” takes time, and within a large company such as Apple it will continue to take months—or years—for them to achieve their goals.  If you have an iPhone and live close to an Apple store, you can do your part by exchanging it yourself.  If you are out of range of an Apple store and have done the exchange, let us know if you have had the same “large box” experience.
