Comic Con International 2011: Traffic Update

"If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway without getting killed or caught…"
Jerry Jeff Walker, L.A. Freeway
So it's probably safe to say that the city of Los Angeles might be kinda bummed that they didn't succeed in luring Comic Con International away from San Diego.
But do they hold a grudge?
Oh, I think so. I can't prove it of course, but this being the internets means I don't have to.

Weekend Reading: Comic Con International, Gene Colan and The Inferior Five
Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Conventions, Editorials, Movies, Television, DC Comics
Apparently, there’s some kind of comic book thing going on in San Diego. I hope enough people show up and it catches on. I never get tired of hearing jokes like that!
The talk of the convention – or I should say one of the talks of the convention – is that DC is getting ready to make the move to the West Coast where its big daddy Warner Bros. is located. It makes a lot of sense, from a dollars-and-cents pov. You can get a lot done faster if your comic book resources are right next door to your movie resources and you don’t have to fly everyone out for meetings or Skype 10 times a day. More importantly, if DC’s on the Warner lot or in a building that Warner is already paying for, they could eliminate the overhead on their NY offices (which could be a huge annual chunk of bucks). And since corporations routinely operate this way, it’d be a sneaky way to have mass layoffs of the people who can’t or won’t go and get rid of any entrenched deadwood that’d be too hard to dismiss without cause.
Carney Talks Spider-Man Musical
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Marvel Comics
In a much-too-long YouTube video, musician Reeve Carney talks about donning the red and blue bodysuit for Broadway.
“We just wanted to get up here on YouTube today to tell you something important to us, and to maybe some people who are fans of certain comic books. Okay, basically, let’s cut to the chase—we wanted to confirm the rumors going around the internet today that I, Reeve Carney, will in fact be playing Peter Parker, the amazing Spider-Man, in the Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.”

John Cusack Possibly Aiming For Preacher Role
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Movies, DC Comics
I know that it’s been quite awhile, but remember how Sam Mendes saw a script for the film adaptation of Preacher? Apparently John Cusack wants in on it, and he seems like a pretty smart dude to be doing so.
When doing his interview rounds for 2012, Cusack was asked about if he would consider doing a comic book film (‘cause, you know, everyone’s a superhero these days). Despite his lackluster response (or knowledge) of comic books, he equivocally spoke about a film that he had been chasing that sounded awfully familiar.
“Yeah, I can [see certain comic books being made into film], there was one or two that I heard of that sounded really cool. One of them was about, I think… it’s a vampire and a killer, and they’re on the road, and it’s this really strange story. I thought that sounded pretty cool. Also some of the obscure ones, I don’t know if there are any more superheroes left… I think it might have been Preacher.”
When asked which character he would wish to portray, he said “either the vampire or the priest. One of those two guys.”
I don’t know about you, but I think that he’d make an amazing Arseface.
i-Caught Takes YouTube to Prime Time

i-Caught is another example of how the Internet is influencing the “real” world. Beginning August 7, ABC is launching a newsmag for YouTubers which will feature breaking news stories and investigations, political issues, celeb sightings, and Internet hoaxes. With anchor Bill Weir, the program plans on taking original videos and some from other viral sites.
“The watershed event that changed newsgathering was the London terror attack in 2005,” said Executive Producer David Sloan. “There were people on that subway who did not know if they would live or die, but they got out their cell phones and started shooting.”
The network is looking for the juciest of clips such as Hoff’s drunken hamburger feed and Michael Richard’s tirade at The Comedy Club. We suggest before they begin airing the show that you go out with your video cam and start looking for your 15 minutes of fame since ABC is still taking submissions.
