Sega Brings Four New Virtual Console Titles
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Retro, SEGA, Virtual Console, Wii
Destructoid has a Sega press release indicating Beyond Oasis, Vectorman, Sonic Spinball, and Sword of Vermillion are soon to be hitting Nintendo’s Virtual Console service. There isn’t an official release date, other than “soon” from Sega PR, but there are a couple of standout titles in the list, and some from gaming history. Sword of Vermillion isn’t a great RPG by today’s standards, but it does offer an early look at some of Yu Suzuki’s work. Beyond Oasis, though, is a strong action-RPG that saw a follow-up on the Sega Saturn in Legend of Oasis. Vectorman was strong platformer using pre-rendered 3-d graphics, and was generally seen as a response to the release of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, so its only a little ironic that the game is coming to the Virtual Console after this week’s Nintendo releases.

Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Retro, Wii
Nintendo’s Virtual Console releases for the week include titles for the Super Nintendo, Genesis, and TurboGrafx-16. Of main interest to gamers will be Nintendo’s Super Mario World, one of the original launch title for the Super NES and a strong entry in the Super Mario platformer franchise. The game, like other SNES titles, sells for 800 points. Also arriving this week is Gain Ground for the Sega Genesis at 800 points and VIGILANTE for the TurboGrafx-16 at 600 points.
Nintendo’s full press release continues after the jump.
Four New Titles In US Virtual Console
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Retro, SEGA, Wii
Nintendo today made four new Virtual Console titles available in the US. The titles include Ice Hockey for the NES at 500 points, Gunstar Heroes and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine for the Genesis at 800 points each, and Alien Crush for the TurboGrafx16 at 600 points. The titles are a decent mix; the most interesting is probably Alien Crush, a classic pinball release. Mean Bean Machine, based around the Puyo Puyo play mechanic may also interest puzzle game fans.

Nintendo To Add New Virtual Console Titles Monday
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Retro, Wii
On December 4, Nintendo will release four new titles for their Virtual Console game service. The releases include Donkey Kong Jr. for 500 Wii Points, Victory Run for the TurboGrafx16 for 600 Points, and Columns and Ristar from the Sega Genesis for 800 Wii Points each. The games will be available starting at 9 AM Pacific time, and Nintendo has promised that each Monday after this will also feature new Virtual Console titles. While the previous selection of Virtual Console titles has been a little uneven in terms of quality, having new releases every week may mean that gamers will get to see more of their past favorites or forgotten cult classics a little sooner.

62 Games In Wii’s First Five Weeks
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Nintendo, Wii
Nintendo of America today announced that Wii owners will have 32 Wii titles and 30 Virtual Console titles available within the first five weeks of the console’s launch date. While third-party software publishers are still polishing Wii software that may or may not be available day-and-date with the console’s launch, Nintendo promises that most or all of these will hit the launch window. As titles get locked down, Nintendo will release an official software launch list. Games appearing within the first five weeks of launch include Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Excite Truck, along with a host of titles from premiere third-party publishers like Activision, Atari, EA, Konami, Sega, and Ubisoft.
Nintendo is also promising 30 Virtual Console games before the end of December, including classic games from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and NEC’s TurboGrafx16.
A full list of the launch window titles for both the Wii and the Virtual Console continue below in Nintendo’s official press release.
Playstation 3 to Emulate SEGA and TurboGrafx

The Playstation 3’s price cut isn’t the only new information coming out of the Tokyo Game Show from Sony. It is well known that the PS3 will support some backwards compatibility with PSOne and PS2 games, but now it has been announced that the PS3 will also be able to play Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx games. The games are likely going to be media downloads, but it may be possible that CD’s or DVD’s will become available including packages of games. Man it’d be cool to play the Sonics all over again! I wonder if 32X, SegaCD, Saturn and Dreamcast games will be added to the list.
I think Nintendo should be a little more hush-hush with their ideas in the future. They announced their motion sensitive controller, so Sony updated theirs to incorporate motion sensitivity. The Wii was announced to play older Nintendo games, and Sony again follows suit with old Sega and TurboGrafx games. Microsoft even jumped on this wagon by starting to offer old arcade games for download on XBOX Live. Being a Genesis and even Master System fan, I am extremely excited about this news, but a little upset that it took an idea from Nintendo to get Sony to add this functionality.

Rumor: Virtual Console Launch Titles
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Internet, Nintendo, Retro, Wii
Game site Play-Nintendo has a list of what they claim to be work-in-progress listing of launch titles for Nintendo’s Virtual Console service. The list is an interesting mix of titles for the original NES, the Super Nintendo, the Nintendo 64, and a couple of Sega Genesis titles. However, the list might be too interesting, since it reads almost like a fan’s dream list of classic games. The appearance of Mortal Kombat on the list is interesting, but with no information about the version, the quality of the title is up in the air. Duck Hunt could be interesting, depending on whether or not light gun support is mapped to the Wii controller. Play-Nintendo’s source also indicated that there were to be at least five new titles to launch with the Virutal Console service. It’s hard to put a lot of weight behind this listing, since Nintendo is unlikely to make any confirmation of this report, but the list does give gamers an inkling of the potential of the Virtual Console.
