Gateway is after the student demographic with their NV Series Notebooks. Available in black, blue, red, or brown, most feature a 15.6-inch LCD (1366×768,) 4GB RAM, 320GB hard drive, webcam, DVD burner, HDMI and Vista Home Premium. The NV5214u, with a price of $499.00, comes with a 2.1GHz dual-core AMD Athlon 64 CPU and ATI Radeon 3200 graphics while the NV5807u has a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and an Intel 4500MHD graphics chipset at a price of $599.00.

Gateway LT1001j Netbook

So where has Gateway been lately? Probably working on its own netbook, although since Acer is now its parent company, reports say that it is simply a cousin to Acer’s Aspire. The LT1001j holds 1GB RAM, has a 8.9-inch display with WSVGA (1,024x600) resolution, a 0.3M webcam, and USB 2.0 and SD card slots. Weighing only 1.06kg, it is powered by an Intel Atom N270 processor and Windows XP OS. Due out in Japan this month, the claim is that because of the similarities, this one won’t hit the States.

Gateway FX541 Desktop PC

Gateway released several new desktops this week, including the next generation of their GT, DX, and FX series. If you are looking for the fastest Gateway in the West, the FX 541 features an Intel Core 2 Quad to Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, 3GB RAM, dual PCIe x16 slots with SLI support, a 9-in-1 media card reader, dual Gigabit Ethernet connection, and dual NVIDIA 8800 GT over-clocked video cards. Prices range from $1,199.99 to $3,499.99. Notice the absence of anything bovine.

Acer to Purchase Gateway

Acer will be taking over Gateway in a $710 million deal. This move will make that company our planet’s third largest producer of PCs (hp and Dell being the first two.) Because Acer is mostly sold in the European and Asian markets and Gateway is predominate in the U.S., they are hoping that the merger will be able to ship in excess of 20 million units a year. The takeover should be completed by this December. Let us have a few moments of silence then for the little company-that-could and its humble cow splotches that became greedy, greedy, greedy.
