Apple releases OS X 10.8.3 build 12D68 to developers

Apple has released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 build 12D68, about a week after the release of OS X 10.8.3 12D65. The company asks developers to focus on AirPlay, AirPort, Game Center, graphics drivers, and Safari. OS X 10.8.3 has seemed to be stuck in developer builds for quite a while, but as the timeframe between dev releases is getting shorter and shorter, that means that there is less and less to fix. If we find anything new, we'll let you know. Developers--grab this update in the Mac App Store.

Apple has seeded OS X 10.8.3 build 12D65 to developers just a week after releasing the 12D61 build. Apple is asking developers to focus on AirPlay, AirPort, Game Center, graphics drivers, and Safari in 12D65. The update also appears to fix the "File:///" bug that currently plagues OS X, where by typing that into a text field, you immediately crash the app you are working in. If you're a Mac dev, you can grab the update through the Mac App Store right now.

Alongside the release of iOS 6, Apple has just released OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2. As we reported previously, this is a pretty substantial update. Sure, there will be the typical bug fixes and optimizations, but you will also find the long-awaited Facebook single sign on functionality, bringing sharing to (and notifications from) the social network built right in to OS X. The update also brings the Power Nap feature to Late 2010 MacBook Air notebooks, phone number support to Messages, shared Reminders lists, the ability to add cards to iOS Passbook from your Mac, and plenty more. Apple is set to release OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 soon, and it's shaping up to be a pretty substantial update. Sure, there will be the typical bug fixes and optimizations, but we can also expect the long-awaited Facebook single sign on functionality, bringing sharing to (and notifications from) the social network built right in to OS X. The update will also bring the Power Nap feature to Late 2010 MacBook Air notebooks, phone number support to Messages, shared Reminders lists, the ability to add cards to iOS Passbook from your Mac, and plenty more. Mountain Lion has been out for a couple of days, available for just $19.99 on the Mac App Store. Judging by our server logs, many of you have already upgraded to the latest Apple OS. For those still on the fence about what exactly you're getting for your Jackson, we figured we'd explain the top user-facing features of OS X 10.8. Sure, Apple is touting that Mountain Lion includes over 200 new features, but redesigned scroll bars are hardly anything to get excited about. Back in June, I detailed the nine features that I wanted Apple to include in iOS 5—features that would fix obvious OS flaws and expand upon its already rock-solid foundation. Days later, at WWDC 2011, Apple revealed a handful of the "200 new features" that would comprise Cupertino's latest mobile operating system—many of which were what I and droves of other iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users had desired for some time. Fast forward to today: iOS 5 is now here, and it surpasses iOS 4 with its overhauled alerts and notification system, wireless syncing, the ability for users to activate iPads without first connecting them to a Mac or PC, and many other much-welcomed features. No operating system—be it mobile or desktop—is without flaws, but Apple iOS 5 manages to keep the dings to a minimum and retains its place as the best phone and tablet operating system. Note: iOS 5 is only compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch 3rd Generation, iPod touch 4th gen, iPad, and iPad 2.

Mac App Store to launch without Game Center, in-app purchases

Back in October, Steve Jobs explained in length how the iOS successes that Apple is enjoying have convinced them to incorporate it back to the Mac platform, and the first piece of that is the an introduction of an App Store in OS X. Promising that the Mac App Store would be live within 90 days, this puts it at some point in January at the latest. Now, Apple is informing developers that some expected features will not be available for Mac OS apps. Namely, in-app purchases, and Game Center. This means that desktop applications will not have access to these features which have started to be common in iOS devices. Whether this is due to a delay on Apple's part, or they simply do not intend to provide these features on the Mac, is unknown as of yet.

UFO on Tape for iPhone is awesome

We’ve been enjoying the heck out of UFO on Tape, a new game released for the iPhone and iPod touch. If you’ve ever dreamed about catching a UFO on film, this game pretty much lets you feel like a hero in that sense—except when your girlfriend starts berating you when the flying saucer goes out of frame! Definitely a fun time though, and it has Game Center support built-in as well. All that for just $0.99. We recommend it.

iOS 4.2 beta for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch now available

Hey, so you know that iOS 4.2 software update that’ll bring multitasking, folders, printing, and a bunch more 4.0 features to the iPad? Well, if you’re a developer, you can download the iOS 4.2 beta right this second. You can install it on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Just know that printing currently requires a specific HP printer, or a pre-release version of Mac OS X 10.6.5…but we’re sure you don’t care about all that, and you just wanna get your hands on the update. If you aren’t in the iPhone Developer program, you better find a friend who is!
iPod touch gets FaceTime, Retina Display, starts at $229

At this morning’s Apple event, Steve Jobs introduced the fourth generation iPod touch. As expected, the iPod touch has been updated to pretty much match what we’ve seen with the iPhone 4. That means it has a Retina Display, as well as dual cameras. A
camera on the back that takes images at 960x720, and a VGA camera on front—yup, that means that the new iPod touch is now FaceTime-compatible. The device is available in three sizes: 8GB for $229, 32GB for $299, and a 64GB model for $399. They’ll be available next week, but you can pre-order starting today.
