I brought in the two iPhone 6 mockups in both 4.7- and 5.5-inch varieties, which made for some good conversation. We also chat about the news of the week, which included the release of the Amazon Fire Phone, and we also had a discussion about what Microsoft needs to do to make Windows Phone more accepted by the general consumer. Fire Phone unlimited free photo storage only applies to smartphone images, doesn’t include videos

You know how Amazon's Fire Phone includes the perk of unlimited photo storage in your Amazon Cloud Drive account? Well, it turns out there are a couple of caveats. Here's how it works:

The free storage is applied to the account that the Fire Phone is registered under
The phone will upload your pictures and videos, but only the pictures get unlimited free space. Videos uploaded will use your Amazon Cloud Drive storage allotment.
Photos uploaded are in their original, full-resolution format
The unlimited free storage only applies to photos taken and uploaded with the Fire Phone. If you sync over photos to the phone that weren't taken with it, those will count against your allotment. Similarly, if you upload photos taken with the Fire Phone from another device, they'll also count against your storage space.
If you give away or sell your Fire Phone, all of your photos will remain in your Amazon Cloud Drive. If you then get a new Fire Phone in the future, the unlimited photo storage benefit will return to your account.

Some have been comparing Amazon's offering to what Apple will be including in iOS 8, and later, OS X Yosemite, where it will also allow you to store all of your photos and videos in iCloud. The difference is that Apple will allow you to automatically upload your entire photo library, regardless of where the images were taken, but there will be a fee if you go over 5GB. There's no unlimited option for images, and certainly not for video.

2012 Holiday Gift Guide: Amazon Kindle Fire

We continue our 2012 Holiday Gift Guide with the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. Why the Fire, and not the Kindle Fire HD? While the HD is a fine tablet in its own right, the price of the regular Kindle Fire is just right--especially if you buy quickly! As it turns out, Amazon is selling the Kindle Fire at a 20% discount for the next 3 hours (or until it runs out of stock, whichever comes first!) Amazon's looking to disrupt the tablet landscape with the Fire, and is pricing the Fire aggressively at $129 during this sale.

Purchasers of the Kindle Fire also get a 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, which'll let you get a nice sampling of what the company's Video on Demand service offers. Other services you can access from the Fire include Amazon's Android Appstore, Kindle books, a host of magazines, Cloud Drive, Cloud Player, and the Amazon MP3 service.

You can pick up a Kindle Fire now for $129 on Amazon. If you miss the sale, it's still a good deal at its regular $159 price.

Next Amazon Kindle Fire to get 1280 x 800 display

Kindle Fire II

Amazon is readying the successor to the Kindle Fire tablet, and AllThingsD is reporting that the device will have a nice, crisp, high-resolution display when it arrives. The display resolution will purportedly be boosted to 1280 x 800. This is the same display resolution (and possibly even the same panels) you'll find in the Google Nexus 7 tablet as well. Interestingly, this means that the Kindle Fire aspect ratio will change, as the current model has a 1.71 ratio while a 1280 x 800 display is 1.60.

With the Kindle Fire being one of the biggest tablets to rival the iPad this holiday season, it is no surprise that we are seeing an update so soon into the New Year. The Kindle Fire update 6.2.2 brings full screen browsing to the Silk broser, as well as a handful of performance tweaks to the Amazon device. Of course, as it is with all software updates, some minor bugs in the software were also fixed. If you are one of the many that have rooted their Fire, you might also want to note that your increased user ability will be taken away. This update can be applied over the air or by visiting the official Kindle Fire site to manually download the update right now, and if you don't have one, you can pick up the Kindle Fire for $199.

In this episode we review the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet e-reader (also see our text version of our Kindle Fire review.) Amazon's looking to disrupt the tablet landscape with the Fire, and is pricing it aggressively at $199. The Kindle Fire weighs 14.6 ounces and packs a 7-inch IPS display, dual-core processor, 512 MB RAM, and 8 GB of on-board storage. It runs a forked version of Android that Amazon has customized in a major way. You also get Wi-Fi built-in as well. Purchasers of the Kindle Fire also get a 30-day trial of Amazon Prime, which'll let you get a nice sampling of what the company's Video on Demand service offers.

The browser, Amazon Silk, will be exclusive to the Kindle Fire for the time being, and it aims to speed up web browsing by a significant margin by offloading some of the heavy lifting to the Amazon EC2 cloud servers.

Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper Escape House Fire

Bradley Cooper and Renee Zellweger Sunday night’s red carpet was brimming with fabulous celebrities, but at least two of them decided to stay home ... with each other.

Renee Zellweger and Bradley Cooper, who starred alongside each other in Case 39, were enjoying a homey celebration in Pennsylvania while others were parading their designer clothes.

The Globes ceremony was plenty exciting, but it was the private Zellweger-Cooper party that drew the real sparks.

The pair were together at Cooper’s mother’s house when a fire broke out. But don’t panic. “It was not a very major fire,” reported one official. “The fireplace got a little out of control,” he explained. “No one was hurt. No one was transported to the hospital.”

Now let’s get to the real meat of the story: Zellweger, Cooper and a roaring fire. Maybe the real sparks weren’t contained to the fireplace alone, hmmm? The stars, both previously married once, have been quietly dating for about a year.

Sony Recalls Some VGN VAIOs

Sony VAIO One step forward, two steps back. As soon as we start to complement Sony on their creativity, we read something like this that kills the mood. The company is recalling about 438,000 VAIOs (over 72,000 in the U.S.) as potential fire hazards. The problem seems to be occurring in their VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300 and VGN-TZ2000 series. They say the problem is “irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or dislodged screw inside the hinge.”

Pretty scary, eh? Especially when you notice that the word “battery” isn’t mentioned.

Ghost Whisperer Affected By Universal Fire

UPDATE: The cause was determined to be accidental. The fire was started by workers using a blowtorch.

Despite all the damage from Sunday’s fire at Universal City, everyone agrees the situation could have been a lot worse.

No cause has yet been determined for the blaze that slightly injured nine firefighters and one sheriff’s deputy. It’s estimated the dollar loss could reach into the millions.

In addition to several structures (which included widely-used New York and New England backdrops), approximately 40,000 to 50,000 items in the studio’s video vault were destroyed. Fortunately, Universal stores copies at a another location.

Two locales used for CBS’ Ghost Whisperer were also ruined in the fire. It’s not believed production on the show - which resumes later this month - should be delayed due to yesterday’s event.
