Surprise Showing of New Star Trek Movie in Texas
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Movies,
It pays to be the right Trekker at the right time. Two hundred moviegoers in Austin, Texas, who were told they would see a trailer to the new Star Trek movie along with “The Wrath of Khan” Monday night, were pleasantly surprised when the Alamo Draughthouse Theater previewed the entire film. The older film had started when it appeared to have melted. After a couple of minutes Leonard Nimoy came out and told fans the good news. Mr. Spock hung around for the showing, as did filmmakers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. The reaction was mostly positive, going as far as a standing ovation when it was over.

Philips Cinema 21:9 LCD TV
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, HDTV, Home Entertainment, Movies,
Philips is in the midst of developing a 56-inch LCD TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio. The Cinema is supposed to be more like a film screen, which is always a good thing. The TV will feature the company’s Ambilight bordered technology. Unfortunately, unless you are in Germany, Belgium, France or the UK, the wait may be a long one. Philips is hoping to release their new creation this spring, far enough away to start stockpiling microwave popcorn and Raisinettes.

Pitt, Novak, and Roth Line Up For Bastards
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Universal, Action, Adventure, Drama, Horror, Period, Political, Casting, Celeb News, Filmmaking, Rumors, Upcoming Releases,
UPDATE: Funnyman Mike Myers has also been recruited! You can find the details here.
As promised, Quentin Tarantino has definitely not stopped working on his epic WWII film, Inglorious Bastards, ever since he completed the script. After years of speculation concerning casting, a few of the roles have recently been confirmed (finally).
What came as quite a shock to most (considering Tarantino’s usual taste in actors), Hollywood heavyweight Brad Pitt was cast as the lead role of Jewish soldier Aldo Raine. Then again, it is only appropriate that Pitt play a part in a real Tarantino film, considering he had a minor role in Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers.

Demi Moore’s Directorial Debut Stays Behind Closed Doors
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: Short Films, Drama, Casting, Celeb News, Celebrity Gossip, Filmmaking, Rumors, Upcoming Releases,
It appears as if Demi Moore‘s latest project has gravitated her behind the camera, placing her alongside starlets-turned-directors like Natalie Portman, Courtney Cox, and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Although the folks over at Glamour magazine are guarding the short film like hawks, Brittany Snow has leaked a few notes about her director:
“She’s so grounded and normal and a really, really talented director. When it comes to this crazy town and industry, she has a very good handle on who she is…She wore jeans and a T-shirt every day and no makeup. She was just so cool.”
The film, which is part of Glamour‘s Reel Moments Series, is slated to premiere this October. Kirsten Dunst, Kate Hudson, and Rita Wilson are among the many actresses who have participated in the past.

Disney to Get Serious Musical Competition: How Spectacular
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Cable, Gossip,
Disney can’t control the market on teen/tween musical movies for much longer, not if kids-based Nickelodeon has anything to say about it.
Spectacular, a new musical comedy set in high school, will begin shooting on April 21 - move over, High School Musical. Newcomers Tammin Sursok, Nolan Funk, and Simon Curtis will star in the film, along with Zoey 101’s Victoria Justice. The film will focus on the school choir and one preppy, pretty female student in particular. A new rock-n-roller joins the group, however unwittingly, and soon enough musical romance is borne between them. Sounds a little familiar…but I can’t quite recall which musical movie plot this might be similar to. Hmmm.
Nick’s high school musical movie is not the classic, cookie-cutter musical film. The numbers in this flick are performance-based rather than random singing insertions. Think more Dreamgirls and less My Fair Lady. Right now, the Viacom-owned cable network isn’t planning on any sequels - though there are contractual options open for just such an occurrence.

Man Auctions Life on eBay
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Smart Home, Internet, Videos,
Here’s an example of someone who took the idea of dispensing with your past on eBay to the extreme. Ian Usher will be auctioning his life on the site beginning June 22. His reason for doing so is that he wants to leave everything and begin again. The sale will include his house and all contents, as well as his car, motorcycle, and jet ski. He will even give you a one-time introduction to his friends and a chance to take over his job. That’s taking a break-up very seriously to go to such extremes, but since the man is a filmmaker he should get a fairly decent documentary out of the experience.

The social networkers selected the actors as well as director Vito Rocco, after half a million viewed his submitted short.
