20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: David Fincher is in talks to dive into 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney’s retelling of Jules Verne’s science fiction novel. The Oscar nominee, who is also linked to a Dragon Tattoo remake (see below), may work from a script from Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum). No possible start date has been announced.

Godzilla: You didn’t think Godzilla would go down without another fight, did ya? Legendary Pictures has announced that it plans to resurrect the giant creature in 2012 with help from Warner Bros. The film, which will not be a sequel to the 1998 version starring Matthew Broderick, will “pay respects” to the 1954 outing. A director has not yet been named.

Fantastic Voyage: James Cameron will serve as producer, not director, in the remake of Fantastic Voyage, a 1960s science fiction film. The story, about a group of colleagues who miniaturize themselves and their submarine to save a dying scientist from the inside, will incorporate technology used on Avatar. Shane Salerno (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem) will handle the script.

“Fantastic Voyage” Becomes a Reality

Israeli scientists from Techion University have teamed with the College of Judea and Samaria to create a one millimeter bot that can be inserted into a patient’s bloodstream, with no miniature Rachel Welch or Stephen Boyd needed. The mini-robot is composed of a hub and tiny arms that can hold on to vessel walls even upstream, and is controllable by its operators almost indefinitely. A similar bot has been created by Kyoto University but its size is one centimeter, too large to get into the smaller spaces. What a pity that Isaac Asimov couldn’t be here to see him novelization come to fruition.
