Infiniti’s electric LE concept, offers zero-emission luxury

The Infiniti LE made its debut at the New York Auto Show this year. Like many concepts, the design, was brilliantly stunning. Luckily, Infiniti plans on staying true to its concept design and introducing a new way of building an EV.
While most EVs are an afterthought, Infiniti went head on with its LE concept. The EV isn’t a rebadged G-series (although it’s about the same size,) instead, it's an original Infinity design--an Infiniti first. All the luxury, sportiness, and a sexy design that you see now, is what you’ll get later. According to Infiniti, the LE Concept sports a 24kWh lithium-ion battery located under the passenger compartment floor, which is the same battery used by the Nissan Leaf. As for tech features, expect Infiniti Connection, which includes Infiniti's Personal Assistant 24-hour concierge service, navigation, and POI search along with a wireless charging system.

Elmoto Electric Bicycle

Help out the little guy and help save the planet at the same time. A couple of German engineers got together to develop the Elmoto, an electric bicycle powered by a 2KW engine. The bike can go for 40 miles on a single lithium-ion battery charge that will only cost about seventy cents. Weighing only 45kg, the aluminum framed vehicle retails for $5,700.00. Because the Elmoto was made with no outside help or funding, the developers are trying to sell 100 globally by the end of this year and mass produce in 2010.

GoCyle Electric Bike

Want to save some energy while making the commute to work? The GoCycle is a possible alternative. The electric bike weighs a mere 16.2kg and can go for about 20 miles before it needs recharging. That will take you only about 3 ½ hours. The GoCycle has a super suspension system for literally saving your bottom, 3 gears and a sealed-for-life chain. SmartSwitch Saves Energy Usage

Curb your partners/spouses, kids, and neighbors’ bad habits of wasting energy. Peter Russo and Brendan Wypich of Stanford University have created a SmartSwitch. The prototype doesn’t keep anyone from turning one on, but if it is done too often the flipping is more difficult. The device provides tactile feedback with a network connection and brake pad. The SmartSwitch fits into a standard electrical box and can be used for a home or an entire community, unless they have secretly purchased a Clapper.

GM Finally Unveils Chevy Volt

If you live in Michigan, you couldn’t help but be inundated with news about the official unveiling of the Chevy Volt. Run on electricity from its 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery, it has a gas/E85-powered engine to sustain the battery and keep the car moving. GM estimates that a driver who drives about 40 miles per day should save about $1,500 a year. Other features include a 7-inch touchscreen display, climate and infotainment controls, GPS, and Bluetooth capability. Unfortunately, GM won’t even begin production until 2010 on the $40,000 car.

LISA Airlines Solar/Electric Hy-Bird

Yesterday a solar powered golf cart, and today we found that LISA Airlines is developing the Hy-Bird, a 100% electric plane powered by hydrogen and solar electricity. The prototype will contain Trina solar photovoltaic cells on the wing and tail for takeoff. In addition, a fuel cell will assist its cruise flight. An electric engine will keep the plane in the air. LISA is hoping that the the plane will be out by the end of 2009.

Revolve Power Strip

Who says that power strips need to be flat, horizontal, or bulky? If your computer is backed into a corner and you never seem to have enough outlets, consider designer Takumi Yoshida’s answer, the Revolve. The electrical hub rotates 360º making it a lot simpler in cramped quarters. Still at the prototype stage, Takumi admits on his Coroflot page that he has seen devices similar to his, but we say there is plenty of room for the competition. AOTOMO Automatic Mahjong Table

We thought it was cool enough to have a machine that shuffles cards, but when we saw this AOTOMO Automatic Mahjong Table we thought it had to be a prototype. Not so. Utilizing electricity, light, and magnetism, and controlled by microcomputer programming, the table automatically shuffles and deals tiles. The company claims that the 95x95x75cm gadget is noiseless. It comes in red, black, or silver, and is made of either plastic or wood. One of us learned how to play mahjong as a kid by our grandmother, and until they make a machine that can kibitz along with shuffling, we think we will pass.
